This is one of the activities commemorating the 65th anniversary of the founding of Hanoi University (now the University of Natural Sciences and the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, under the Vietnam National University, Hanoi) and the 77th anniversary of the founding of the Vietnam People's Army.
The location of the memorial is where Professor Nguy Nhu Kon Tum, the Rector, once bid farewell to generations of faculty and students of Hanoi University who joined the military to defend the Fatherland.
The bronze monument, shaped like a pen or inkwell, depicts student soldiers and stands 1,596 cm tall on a 1,100 cm high stone base surrounded by four flowerbeds that bloom in all four seasons. This monument honors many generations of teachers and students from the two schools who participated directly and indirectly in the resistance wars to defend the homeland, especially the largest enlistment in September 1971, which included nearly 400 teachers and students from the two schools, along with tens of thousands of teachers and students from 33 universities and colleges in the North. Many sacrificed their lives on various paths across the country. The funding for the monument was raised from contributions by individual veterans, staff, students, and teachers from the two schools throughout different periods, as well as generous donors.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vu Hoang Linh (Rector of the University of Science) and Prof. Dr. Hoang Anh Tuan (Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities) emphasized the sacred significance of the Monument construction project in educating current and future generations of students about the tradition of patriotism and self-sacrifice for the Fatherland. At the same time, the leaders of the two universities expressed their gratitude to the individuals and organizations that contributed funds to complete the project. In the future, when the pandemic situation improves, the two universities will organize a commemorative event more befitting the achievements of the project.
