Main content of the Project

  1. Firstly - From a historical perspective: A study of the economic and religious aspects of rural Vietnam through information gathered from steles. Topics include: the financial cycle in tribute activities; the value of currency over the centuries; the leading role of women; the role of village officials and the monastic class; and folk Buddhism in the practical life of Vietnamese villages.
  2. Secondly - From a linguistic perspectiveThis study investigates the emergence of Vietnamese sounds (Nôm script and Vietnamese grammar) through data collected from epigraphic texts (e.g., place names) and recorded according to pure Vietnamese grammar; it also examines the phonology of ancient Vietnamese by exploiting the archives of the Paris Foreign Missions Society (MEP).
  3. Thirdly - In terms of the epigraphic database.: Build a database of source materials containing rubbings and, if possible, supplement it with a collection of inscriptions, continuing the comprehensive collection of rubbings of Han Nom inscriptions that was started more than ten years ago. Create a set of computer tools for searching research data (by chronology, place name, keywords, etc.).
  4. Fourth - From a map perspective: Establish an electronic map to study the distribution of epigraphic inscriptions. Topic: creating a digital map database, studying changes in place names throughout history, researching and compiling ancient maps at the local level (this source material is stored at the Asian Library, Paris).
  5. Thursday - From a digital humanistic perspectiveUtilizing technological techniques and computational methods, digital humanities are employed to automatically process inscription content. The focus is on: automatically identifying columns and characters, and systematically searching for all occurrences of special marks/characters.
  6. Friday - In terms of digital documentation: Provide researchers with a catalog of old books about Vietnam, primarily in French. Topic: Create an electronic library including PDF, EPUB, and other document formats, along with book catalogs and indexes in both Vietnamese and English. This database will be used for specialized research.
  7. Saturday - In terms of trainingThe project encourages students to pursue master's degree programs, doctoral studies, postdoctoral research, and to become long-term researchers. A portion of the budget is allocated to master's and doctoral training and thesis supervision.
  8. Eighth - In terms of publishing: Publishing the scientific achievements of project members in the form of specialized journal articles, research books, etc., in accordance with the requirements/recommendations of a scientific committee.
