Precious photographs from the life and career of Professor and People's Teacher Phan Huy Le, along with stories and memories of a brilliant scientist and exemplary teacher, were recalled and honored by colleagues and generations of students during the series of events commemorating the 90th birthday of Professor of History and People's Teacher Phan Huy Le, held at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi today, February 23, 2024. The event was co-organized by the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, the Institute of Vietnamese Studies and Development Science, Vietnam National University, Hanoi; the Vietnam Historical Science Association and the Center for Asian Studies Support. At the photo exhibition, glimpses into Professor Phan Huy Le's life in scientific activities, training, and international cooperation, along with familiar photos with family, friends, and colleagues, recreate a portrait of Professor Phan Huy Le, a man who dedicated his entire life to Vietnamese historical science. The book, titled "Phan Huy Le's Posthumous Works: Understanding Vietnamese History," has been respectfully launched, comprising 27 articles by Professor Phan Huy Le from 1982 to 2018. This is the culmination of the dedication of his family and generations of scientists who were his students, aiming to honor and celebrate the Professor's legacy. As part of this commemorative series, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities co-organized a scientific seminar, bringing together scientists, historians, training and research institutions, and associations founded and developed by Professor Phan Huy Le. The presentations researched, summarized, and further affirmed and emphasized the personality and career of Phan Huy Le within the contemporary and future flow of Vietnamese historiography and science. Professor Phan Huy Le, People's Teacher, is a towering figure in modern Vietnamese historiography, a renowned scientist and educator. He is one of the "Four Pillars" of the School of Synthesis Historiography in particular, and of contemporary Vietnamese historiography in general, an outstanding successor to the pioneering generation of Vietnamese Revolutionary historiography. As the President of the Vietnam Historical Science Association from 1988 to 2016 and Head of the Department of Ancient and Medieval Vietnamese History, Faculty of History, University of Hanoi (now the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi), Professor made immense contributions to the development of education and the field of historiography in Vietnam over three decades. He also founded the Center for Vietnamese Studies and Cultural Exchange at the University of Hanoi (the predecessor of the current Institute of Vietnamese Studies and Development Science, Vietnam National University, Hanoi), and initiated the establishment of the Faculty of Oriental Studies at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, paving the way for new fields of study such as Oriental Studies, Japanese Studies, and Southeast Asian Studies in Vietnam. Professor Phan Huy Le also led the historical community and the social sciences and humanities in fostering connections and dialogue with Vietnamese researchers abroad, becoming one of the important bridges connecting Vietnamese history and social sciences with the world in the context of the country's international integration. His name has become a source of pride for his students and colleagues both domestically and internationally.
