The Draft of Development Strategy of VNU until 2025, vision for 2035 states the missions of VNU as “train high–quality human resources, cultivate talents, conduct basic research and develop multi–disciplinary, multi–dimensional technology, transfer knowledge to serve national development; pioneer the innovations of Vietnam's education and training”. In 2025, VNU will “become a multi–disciplinary, multi–dimensional research-based university according to the criteria of an advanced research-based university in the region and in Asia, including internationally–standard majors and disciplines”.
The main values were defined as: “Talent nurturing – Innovation – Responsibility – Uniting in diversity”. The motto: “To be the best at using knowledge”.
For development goals until 2025, the Draft identifies specific goals in different areas: training human resources – scientific research and developing hi–tech integration and internationalization. The Draft also presents basic measures to develop skilled staff; improve developmental cooperation; modernize facilities; innovate university governance; and promote financial resources.
Participants in the conference said the draft was compiled with sincerity and enthusiasm, reflecting the determination of leaders to strongly develop VNU and make it a leading and internationally– standardized university in the region. This is also an opportunity for member universities to revise their current conditions, identify their goals and define development paths in conjunction with the development goals of VNU.
Prof.Dr Nguyen Van Khanh (Rector of USSH) emphasized the need to identify the correct status, the role and contributions of Social Sciences and Humanities in the development strategy of VNU. On the utilization of numerical criteria such as the number of articles in ISI database and staff, it is necessary to recognize the peculiarities of USSH.
Assoc. Prof Vu Van Quan (Dean of Faculty of History) emphasized that the development of high–quality staff must be considered the crucial component of development goals. To this end, specific examination of the current staff is needed regarding age, skills, research areas, etc…, through which prioritized and focused investments can be made.
Prof. Dr Phung Huu Phu (Dean of Faculty of Political Sciences) noted that: the development strategy of VNU must consider the special and particular domestic conditions and be a part of the whole strategy of constructing, developing and protecting Vietnam in the coming time. The goals and missions of VNU must go in line with the national requirements and missions, and in close association with the basic and comprehensive development of Vietnam's education set out in the 8th Central Resolution of the Communist Party. In addition, VNU must clarify its comparative advantages, how to identify and concretize its relative position among the domestic, regional and international universities. To become a distinguished university, VNU must aim to be a destination for talents and provide every opportunity to maximize individual creativity.
Other advice and opinions were provided for the Draft and the future development of VNU.
