"Ireland’s Economic Transformation": Understand more about Vietnam from an international perspective

On October 6, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University Hanoi (VNU - USSH) had a working session with the Irish Embassy in Vietnam within the framework of educational cooperation and organized a talk show “Ireland’s Economic Transformation”.

Attending the meeting, on behalf of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, there was Prof. Dr. Hoang Anh Tuan - Rector of the university; and a representative of the Cooperation and Development Department.
On the side of Hanoi National University, there was Dr. Nguyen Thi Anh Thu - Head of the Cooperation and Development Department.
VNU – USSH welcomed the presence of Ms. Deirdre Ní Fhallúin - Irish Ambassador to Vietnam; Mr. Conor Finn - Deputy Head of the Embassy's representative delegation; Ms. Nguyen Thi Huong - Bilateral Relations Advisor and Professor Alan Barrett - Executive Director of the Irish Institute of Economic and Social Research.

At the meeting, Prof.Dr. Hoang Anh Tuan - Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities shared: The University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU, Hanoi has a leading mission in training high-quality human resources; research, create and disseminate knowledge in social sciences and humanities - always promote cooperation in research and implementation of development projects with partners and scientific agencies at home and abroad.
The University of Social Sciences and Humanities is also well aware of the dynamic changes of today's youth, requiring teaching programs to be highly realistic and promptly updated with trends. On this basis, the university has been implementing many new lecture and subject orientations, in accordance with international standards such as Entrepreneurship or creating opportunities for students to go internships and exchanges at academic institutions and international organizations in many countries around the world. The talkshow " Ireland’s Economic Transformation " promises to bring new perspectives and knowledge to students, not only about the Irish economy but also factors that influence the global economy, as well as the solutions and questions raised for the Vietnamese economy.

At the meeting, both sides discussed and reached a general consensus on linking and co-organizing seminars between Irish universities and VNU - USSH, exchanging students and lecturers between the two countries as well as designing study programs with highly applicable subjects in the current context of the job market in Vietnam - Ireland and around the world.

Professor Alan Barrett - Executive Director of the Irish Institute of Economic and Social Research expressed his desire to continue to cooperate with VNU - USSH and affirmed: Economy and Society always go hand in hand.

Ms. Deirdre Ní Fhallúin - Irish Ambassador to Vietnam said: Ireland places great importance on higher education and she is pleased to say that partnerships between Irish and Vietnamese Higher Education Institutions continue to be strong, including with Vietnam National University and its member universities. The University of Social Sciences and Humanities is one of the long-term and well-known partners with many universities in Ireland. Taking into consideration the long history of achievements in cooperation between VNU - USSH and universities in Ireland, the Irish Embassy will continue to be a connecting bridge, bringing USSH - VNU closer to potential partners in Ireland. The Irish Government is committed to capacity-building in Vietnam and to facilitating linkages between institutions in Ireland and Vietnam, in education as well as in other areas, such as economic governance and agriculture.

The discussion “Ireland’s Economic Transformation” was an overview of the European Union and its member economies, introducing valuable insights into the economic transition. Ireland has from a small agriculture-based economy to a developed nation with a strong focus on modern services, foreign direct investment, and education. The talk delved deeper into Ireland's success from an industrial nation to a focus on services, and from there drew some lessons for other economies.

Professor Alan Barrett and more than 660 students from the University of Social Sciences and Humanities had an active discussion with questions and positive exchanges about the situation, changes in the Irish economy, influencing factors, and applications in Vietnam as well as the strategic partnership between Vietnam and Ireland.

Professor Alan Barrett is the Executive Director of the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI), a leading center in Ireland for policy-oriented social science research. He is an accomplished economist with a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in the United States. He is a recognized expert in his field and has frequently contributed to discussions on economic matters, being quoted in prestigious publications like The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and The Economist.
