1. Purpose and research objects of the thesis

Purpose: To clarify the role of ASEAN in Japan's policy in the period 2001-2016 through analyzing the content and implementation of Japan's policy towards ASEAN during that period, and at the same time pointing out the impacts of the policy on ASEAN and Vietnam, on that basis, giving some policy suggestions for Vietnam.

Subject: Japan's policy towards ASEAN in the period 2001-2016.

Synthetic analysis method; statistical method; comparative method; logical chronological method; foreign policy analysis method.

3. Main results and conclusions

3.1. Main results

The thesis has carried out specific research tasks and achieved the following main results:

- Studied the theoretical and practical foundations of Japan's policy making towards ASEAN in the period 2001-2016.

- Researched and clarified the content and implementation of Japan's policy towards ASEAN in the period 2001-2016.

- Researched and clarified the characteristics of Japan's policy towards ASEAN during this period.

- Evaluated the results and impacts of this policy on Southeast Asia, ASEAN and Vietnam.

- Researched Japan's policy prospects towards ASEAN in the coming time.

- Provide policy recommendations for Vietnam in its relations with two important partners, Japan and ASEAN.

3.2. Conclusion

- Japan's policy towards ASEAN in the period 2001-2016 was developed based on some main arguments of Realism, Liberalism and the influence of the 3-level approach in policy analysis.

- Japan's policy towards ASEAN during this period was implemented in four areas: politics - diplomacy, economics, security - defense and culture - society. Although there were still some limitations, this policy has initially achieved positive results.

- This policy has created great impacts on the Southeast Asian region, ASEAN and Vietnam in both positive and negative aspects. The achievements of cooperation over the past 45 years between Japan and ASEAN, together with the favorable international context, are the basis for Japan's policy towards ASEAN to be welcomed by these countries in the future.

- Having clarified the characteristics of the Japan's policies towards the ASEAN in this period.

- Having assessed the results and impacts of the Japan's policies towards the Southeast Asia, ASEAN and Vietnam in the period of 1992-2016.

- Having done the research into possible policy prospects of Japan to the ASEAN in the coming years.

- Having suggested some suitable policies to Vietnam in the relations with the two important partners (Japan and the ASEAN).
