- The thesis chooses an approach from local knowledge to suggest a new way of thinking in assessing the adaptability, ability to use and protect the natural environment of the Tay people in Ba Be district, Bac Kan province.

- The thesis provides an important source of scientific documents on local knowledge of the Tay people in Ba Be district, Bac Kan province in general, and of the Tay community in Ba Be lake area in particular.

- Based on objective criticism, respecting the voice of the community, the thesis points out the shortcomings of local knowledge under the impact of policies and development projects in recent times. Besides the undesirable impacts, it also motivates the Tay people here to change their livelihood methods to suit the new conditions.

11. Practical application:

- The thesis contributes to providing some lessons and solutions for environmental protection projects, choosing sustainable livelihoods not only for the Tay community in Ba Be, Bac Kan.

- Research on local knowledge of other ethnic groups in the Northern mountainous region.

- Research on changes in cultural life of residential communities in the current period.

- Based on objective criticism, with respect to the voices of the community, the thesis explores the negative influences of policies, as well as development projects on local knowledge in the past. Besides, their positive effects also motivate the Tay people to change their livelihoods to adapt to new conditions.

The thesis provides some experiences and solutions for environmental protection projects and for community development based on sustainable livelihood not only of the Tay community in Ba Be, Bac Kan but also of other ethnics.
