History of formation

The Faculty of History was one of the first faculties of Hanoi University, now the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi. According to Decree No. 775-ND, dated September 14, 1956, of the Ministry of Education, the Faculty of Literature and History was officially established. Also in 1956, the Faculty of Literature and History was split into two faculties: the Faculty of History and the Faculty of Literature. From then on, many prominent figures, great works, and generations of bachelors, masters, and doctoral graduates in the fields of History and Cultural Studies made significant contributions to the struggle for national independence, the building and protection of the Fatherland.

Mission

As one of the key, prestigious, and long-standing basic science faculties, the Faculty of History has the mission of leading the way in creating and disseminating knowledge and training high-quality human resources in diverse disciplines and fields of history and cultural studies to serve the cause of national construction and development.

Key achievements

Over more than 65 years of establishment and development, the Faculty of History has had over 200 staff members and achieved many important accomplishments in the fields of training and research in History and Cultural Studies:

  • Establishing the academic style of the School of Synthesis of History.
  • He has chaired and participated in numerous major programs, projects, and research topics related to the history and culture of Vietnam and the world.
  • Published over 6,000 research papers both domestically and internationally.
  • We have trained nearly ten thousand Bachelor's, Master's, and Doctoral graduates.
  • The Faculty was awarded the title of Hero of Labor during the Renovation Period (2000) and Professor Tran Van Giau personally (2003).
  • The Faculty, many departments, and individuals within the Faculty were awarded Labor Medals of the First, Second, and Third Class.
  • 6 Ho Chi Minh Prizes (Prof. Tran Duc Thao, Prof. Dao Duy Anh, Prof. Tran Van Giau, Prof. Ha Van Tan, Prof. Tran Quoc Vuong, Prof. Phan Huy Le); 4 State Prizes (Prof. Phan Huy Le, Prof. Phan Dai Doan, Prof. Phan Huu Dat, Assoc. Prof. Nguyen Thua Hy).
  • International Awards: Professor Phan Huy Le received the Fukuoka Asian Culture International Prize (Japan, 1996), the Order of the Academic Palms (France, 2002), Corresponding Member of the Academy of Inscriptions and Fine Arts (France, 2011), and Honorary Doctor (Docteur Honoris Causa) of the French School of Far Eastern Studies (France, 2016); Professor Tran Quoc Vuong received the Rockefeller Fellow Award (USA, 1990), Person of the Year 2000 (ABC, USA), One of the 2000 Scholars of the 20th Century (IBC, Cambridge, UK, 2000), Senior Professor (Tokyo, Japan, 2000), and Representative Figure in the Asia-Pacific (Asian Pacific Who is Who - India, 2004).

Development orientation

Continue to improve the quality of undergraduate and postgraduate training, focusing on building and developing the fields of Cultural Studies and Cultural Management, along with several new disciplines, based on strengthening interdisciplinary approaches, diversifying training methods, ensuring high quality, exploiting existing potential, adapting to and gradually expanding the political and social service capabilities of history and cultural studies; promote academic activities and expand cooperative relationships with universities and research centers in the region and around the world.
