The Institute of Journalism and Communication Training (Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi) is one of the leading institutions for journalism and communication training and research in Vietnam today.
More than a quarter of a century has passed since the first time journalism training and research was established within a leading university specializing in social sciences and humanities in Vietnam. Today, after nearly 35 years of development, the Institute of Journalism and Communication has gradually affirmed its position in research and training human resources for the country's journalism industry.
Studying and working in a leading training and research environment for social sciences and humanities in Vietnam, students of the Institute have access to and are imparted with fundamental, foundational, and in-depth knowledge of important backgrounds, helping future journalists to have a comprehensive understanding of society along with specialized professional skills. This is also a leading journalism and media training institution with a modern and comprehensive system of training equipment in Vietnam today.
From this place, thousands of students, postgraduate students, and researchers have graduated, joined the national journalism and media community, and made many noteworthy contributions.
Currently, the Institute of Journalism and Communication Training offers two undergraduate programs: Journalism and Public Relations; two master's programs: Journalism (research-oriented and application-oriented) and Media Management; and one doctoral program (Journalism). The Institute is also one of the first journalism training institutions in Vietnam to collaborate with the University of Stirling (UK) to offer a Master's program in Media Management, with a degree awarded by the University of Stirling. It was the first institution to offer a Master's program in Research-Oriented Journalism (since 1997), an Application-Oriented Master's program in Journalism (since 2017), and a Master's program in Media Management (since 2020). The Institute of Journalism and Communication Training is also one of the leading centers for journalism and communication research in the country, with national and ministerial-level scientific projects. The Institute is a major hub for international exchange in journalism and communication research and training with many foreign training and research institutions and media organizations.
History of formation
• In 1990: The Ministry of Education and Training authorized the opening of a Journalism major and established the Faculty of Journalism at Hanoi University.
• 1991: On October 12, 1991, the first course in Journalism commenced at lecture hall 19 Le Thanh Tong Street with 160 students.
• In 1997: The Ministry of Education and Training assigned the task of training postgraduate students in Journalism to the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Vietnam National University, Hanoi), enrolling the first cohort in 1997.
• In 2005: Hanoi National University assigned the task of training doctoral students to the Faculty of Journalism, with the first cohort enrolling in 2007.
• 2008: The Faculty of Journalism was renamed the Faculty of Journalism and Communication.
• In 2012: Hanoi National University assigned the task of training students in Public Relations at the undergraduate level to the University of Social Sciences and Humanities. The Faculty of Journalism and Communication is currently the only faculty-level unit in Vietnam that trains students in both fields: Journalism and Public Relations.
• In 2014: Hanoi National University authorized an international joint program with Stirling University (UK) to train and award a Master of Science in Media Management degree at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities.
• In 2017: Hanoi National University issued a Master's program in Journalism with an applied orientation and assigned the task of training to the University of Social Sciences and Humanities. This was the first applied-oriented Master's program in Journalism in Vietnam.
• 2018: On July 18, 2018, the Institute of Journalism and Communication Training was established, based on the integration of resources from the Faculty of Journalism and Communication and the Center for Journalism and Communication Professional Development (CMP).
• In 2020: Hanoi National University issued a Master's program in Journalism and Media Management and assigned the task of training to the University of Social Sciences and Humanities. This was the first Master's degree program in Journalism and Media Management in Vietnam.
Mission:The Institute of Journalism and Communication Training has the mission of leading in journalism and communication training and research, providing high-quality human resources to meet the needs of an information society in the context of globalization and digitalization.
Vision:Leveraging the strengths and traditions of an applied research and training institution within the basic sciences school, we will focus resources on building the Institute of Journalism and Communication Training into a leading, interdisciplinary, and multidisciplinary unit, at the forefront of journalism and communication training and research, meeting the demands of society and international integration.
Key achievements
From 1990 to the present, the Institute has trained more than 10,000 full-time and part-time bachelor's degree holders, nearly 1,000 master's and doctoral degree holders, effectively serving the Vietnamese press and media industry.
The Institute's graduates consistently find employment within a year of graduation, with a success rate exceeding 95%. Over 100 of the Institute's alumni have won national journalism awards and awards from various sectors and levels. Many of the Institute's alumni hold high-level leadership positions in central and local media organizations.
Successfully implemented numerous research programs and scientific projects at the national, ministerial, and sectoral levels. Organized many international scientific conferences and implemented many key cooperation projects.
Over nearly 35 years of establishment and development, the Institute of Journalism and Communication Training has achieved many accomplishments:
• Third-Class Labor Medal (2015).
• Certificate of Merit from the Prime Minister (2005).
• Certificates of Merit from Hanoi National University (2000, 2005, 2010, 2013, 2015, 2019, 2022, 2023)
• Certificate of Merit from the Central Propaganda Department (2015).
• Certificates of Merit from the Vietnam Journalists Association (2015, 2017, 2022, 2023).
• Certificate of Merit from the Ministry of Education and Training (2020)
• Emulation flag of Vietnam National University, Hanoi in 2020 and 2021
• Awards and commendations from numerous provinces and cities across the country.
