The Institute of Journalism and Communication (University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi) is one of the leading training and research institutions in journalism and communication in Vietnam today.
More than a quarter of a century has passed since the first event of journalism training and research being placed in a leading university of social sciences and humanities in Vietnam. Up to now, after nearly 35 years of construction and development, the Institute of Journalism and Communication has gradually affirmed its position in research and training of human resources for the country's journalism.
Studying and working in the leading training and research environment of social sciences and humanities in Vietnam, students of the Institute are exposed to and imparted with basic, fundamental and profound knowledge of important knowledge bases, helping future journalists have a comprehensive understanding of society along with specialized professional skills. This is also a journalism and media training facility with the most modern and synchronous training equipment system in Vietnam today.
From here, thousands of students, postgraduates and researchers have graduated, joined the national journalism and media community and made many remarkable contributions.
Currently, the Institute of Journalism and Communication offers two undergraduate majors: Journalism and Public Relations; two master's majors: Journalism (research-oriented and application-oriented) and Journalism and Communication Management; one PhD (Journalism). The Institute is also one of the first journalism training institutions in Vietnam to cooperate with the University of Stirling (UK) to organize a joint training program for a Master's degree in Communication Management awarded by the University of Stirling. It is the first institution to offer a Master's program in Research-oriented Journalism (since 1997) and a Master's program in Applied Journalism (since 2017), a Master's program in Journalism and Communication Management (2020) and in the near future will continue to develop bachelor's programs in Digital Journalism, PhD in Mass Communication, etc.
The Institute of Journalism and Communication is also one of the leading centers for journalism and communication research in the country with scientific works at the national, ministerial and sectoral levels. The Institute is one of the major focal points in international exchanges on journalism and communication research and training with many training and research units and foreign press agencies.
History of formation
• 1990: The Ministry of Education and Training allowed the opening of a Journalism major and established the Faculty of Journalism at Hanoi University of Science.
• 1991: October 12, 1991, opened the first course of Journalism, at lecture hall 19 Le Thanh Tong with 160 students.
• 1997: The Ministry of Education and Training assigned the task of training postgraduate students in Journalism to the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (VNU Hanoi), enrolling the first course in 1997.
• 2005: Hanoi National University assigned the task of training PhDs to the Faculty of Journalism, enrolling the first class in 2007.
• 2008: Renamed Faculty of Journalism to Faculty of Journalism and Communication.
• 2012: Hanoi National University assigned the task of training Public Relations at the university level at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities. The Faculty of Journalism and Communication is the only faculty-level unit in Vietnam currently training both majors: Journalism and Public Relations.
• 2014: Hanoi National University allowed the implementation of an international joint program with Stirling University (UK) to train and grant a Master of Science degree in Media Management at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities.
• 2017: Hanoi National University issued a training program for Master of Journalism with application orientation and assigned the training task to the University of Social Sciences and Humanities. This is the first Master of Journalism with application orientation program in Vietnam.
• 2018: On July 18, 2018, the Institute of Journalism and Communication was established, on the basis of integrating the resources of the Faculty of Journalism and Communication and the Center for Journalism and Communication (CMP).
• 2020: Hanoi National University issued a training program for the Master of Journalism and Communication Management degree and assigned the training task to the University of Social Sciences and Humanities. This is the first Master of Journalism and Communication Management degree program in Vietnam.
Mission:The Institute of Journalism and Communication has the mission of leading in journalism and communication training and research, providing high-quality human resources to meet the needs of an information society in the context of globalization and digitalization.
Vision:Promoting the strengths and traditions of an applied research and training institution in a basic science school, focusing resources on building the Institute of Journalism and Communication Training into a leading, interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary unit, leading in journalism and communication training and research, meeting the requirements of society and international integration.
Outstanding achievements
Since 1990, the Institute has trained more than 10,000 regular and non-regular bachelors, nearly 1,000 masters and doctors, effectively serving the Vietnamese press and media industry.
The number of students of the Institute who have jobs after one year of graduation is always over 95%. More than 100 alumni of the Institute have won the National Press Award and journalism awards of various sectors and levels. Many alumni of the Institute are holding senior leadership positions in central and local press agencies.
Successfully implemented many research programs and scientific topics at the national, ministerial and industry levels. Organized many international scientific conferences and implemented many key cooperation projects.
Nearly 35 years of construction and development, the Institute of Journalism and Communication has achieved many achievements:
• Third Class Labor Medal (2015).
• Certificate of Merit from the Prime Minister (2005).
• Certificate of Merit from Hanoi National University (2000, 2005, 2010, 2013, 2015, 2019, 2022, 2023)
• Certificate of Merit from the Central Propaganda Department (2015).
• Certificate of Merit from Vietnam Journalists Association (2015, 2017, 2022, 2023).
• Certificate of Merit from the Ministry of Education and Training (2020)
• Emulation flag of Hanoi National University in 2020, 2021
• Certificates of merit from many provinces and cities across the country.
