Professor Tran Quoc Vuong was instrumental in pioneering and establishing many new scientific disciplines and subjects. From 1980 to 1993, he served as Head of the Department of Archaeology, and from 1989 to 2005, he was Director of the Center for Intercultural-Historical Studies. From 1993 to 1996, Professor Tran Quoc Vuong was Head of the Department of Cultural Studies at the University of General Studies, Vietnam National University, Hanoi. From 1998 until his death in 2005, he was Head of the Department of Cultural Studies and Vietnamese Cultural History.

The late Professor, Distinguished Educator Tran Quoc Vuong (1934-2005)
From the very beginning of his work at the Department of History, in addition to teaching and researching Vietnamese ancient history, he soon focused on developing the field of Archaeology. With the help of several colleagues, Professor Tran Quoc Vuong was the first to teach Archaeology to students of the Department of History, becoming the first archaeologist of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam.
Professor Tran Quoc Vuong, along with the pioneering generation of the History Department, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, ignited and fueled a passion for exploring and researching the history and culture of the nation among generations of students. Furthermore, Professor Tran Quoc Vuong was one of the scientists who made significant contributions to the research, preservation, and affirmation of the national cultural identity and the indomitable patriotic traditions of the Vietnamese people, forged and tempered through thousands of years of struggle for nation-building and defense. Before being awarded the title of Professor by the State in 1980, he had already been respectfully and affectionately called Professor by the people for decades, and was honored as one of the "four pillars" of the History Department, and more broadly, of the field of Vietnamese History and Culture. His name became legendary and a source of pride for many generations of students.

As one of the leading archaeologists, along with his colleagues, Professor Tran Quoc Vuong participated in identifying and clarifying the typical contributions and values of Vietnamese cultures and cultural eras in relation to and correlation with the regional and global cultural environment.
He himself admitted, and generations of colleagues and students acknowledged, that "If he didn't travel a lot, speak a lot, and write a lot, he wouldn't be himself anymore."aHe spent many years traveling extensively on field surveys, "wandering from the source to the end of the sea," from the heart of Hanoi to the furthest corners of the country, to learn, research, and discover about the history and culture of the nation. He traveled, studied, and contemplated, truly immersing himself in challenging scientific problems and overcoming many storms to become a prominent figure in the fields of Vietnamese history, archaeology, and cultural studies. In the past nearly 50 years, he has written more than 50 books and nearly 1,000 monographs and articles in hundreds of specialized journals and various mass media outlets. He has shared the valuable knowledge he gained from his homeland, his people, his teachers, the history and culture of the nation, and of his time, to his students and those who are passionate about and love the history and culture of Vietnam and the world.

Many of his works and textbooks, along with those of his contemporaries, laid the initial and essential foundation for research, teaching, and learning for students of the Faculty of History and many other faculties and schools within the Vietnam National University, Hanoi, as well as universities, research institutions, and training centers nationwide. Professor Tran Quoc Vuong's research not only profoundly summarizes academic achievements and perspectives, and updates on new scientific information both domestically and internationally, but also provides invaluable guidance and ideas for future generations of researchers.
He directly trained and mentored hundreds of undergraduates, dozens of graduate students, and doctoral candidates. Many who studied under him or were influenced by his academic views have now become successful and hold important positions in administrative agencies, universities, and research institutes nationwide. He was a teacher, a peer, a fellow student, a colleague, and a close friend to many who studied and loved Vietnamese history and history-culture both domestically and internationally.

His extensive fieldwork and surveys throughout North, Central, and South Vietnam, from cities to villages and even many remote areas of the country, honed his talent and reputation through learning, understanding, and application. And it was he, through his creative and unique scientific work, who illuminated the historical and cultural characteristics of the regions where he lived and worked.
As a renowned scientist both domestically and internationally, Professor Tran Quoc Vuong has participated in and chaired numerous national and international scientific conferences in Russia, the United States, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, and the Philippines. He has contributed significantly to establishing many international collaborative relationships in the fields of Archaeology and Cultural Studies. It can be said that no international scientist interested in or researching Vietnamese history and culture is unaware of his name or has consulted with him on his work. Professor Tran Quoc Vuong has made crucial contributions to integrating the fields of History, Archaeology, and Cultural Studies into the regional and international academic environment, helping the world better understand the historical traditions and distinctive characteristics of Vietnamese culture.
He became himself – Professor Tran Quoc Vuong. And, along with other great figures, he pioneered, persevered, and remained steadfast throughout the long journey of building and developing the historical sciences and social sciences of Vietnam. Not only for the past half-century, many people have needed him, but for generations to come, students, researchers, and lecturers in History, Archaeology, and Cultural Studies will still need him, continue the ideas he pioneered, follow the paths he walked, and write the epics of the nation's history and culture that he wrote, multiplying the brilliance of Professor Tran Quoc Vuong many times over, so that he will live on and shine brightly for generations to come.
