The Department of Vietnamese Studies and Vietnamese Language (VHN&TV) at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, attracts students from all over the world, including Russia, Poland, the United States, Cuba, Australia, China, South Korea, and Japan. At the VHN&TV Department, students not only learn the Vietnamese language and culture through lectures, but also directly experience and participate in Vietnamese cultural activities through field trips to beautiful regions of Vietnam.
This is a unique hallmark of the Faculty in student training and also an activity that leaves a deep impression on international students. Throughout their studies, students from many countries participate in field trips in various forms according to their subjects and courses. Through these trips, students can improve their Vietnamese language skills, gain a better understanding of Vietnamese culture, the country and its people, and hone their professional skills before graduation. Furthermore, these international students also act as bridges and ambassadors, promoting the beauty of Vietnam, its people and culture to their international friends.
The destination for this field trip of the group of students from the Faculty of Vietnamese Studies and Vietnamese Language, from Japan, South Korea, and China, was Cao Phong district, Hoa Binh province. Over 15 days (from November 26th to December 10th, 2022), the students had the opportunity to live and eat in the local area, learn about the economic activities and social life, and directly participate in some cultural activities of the local community.
During this field trip, under the guidance of Dr. Bui Van Tuan (Deputy Head of the Department of Vietnamese Studies and Vietnamese Language), international students learned about promoting traditional cultural values associated with community tourism in Cao Phong district, Hoa Binh province; studied the household economic model in Cao Phong district; and researched the livelihood models of people in the Hoa Binh Lake area.
According to some international students, the trip provided incredibly enjoyable experiences. The scenery was beautiful, the climate was pleasant, and the local people were friendly and enthusiastic. For the first time, the international students visited the stilt houses of ethnic minorities and toured the Muong Cultural Space Museum, which displays many valuable artifacts reflecting the rich material and spiritual life of the people here. And especially, the students were extremely delighted and excited to participate in the process of wrapping banh chung and banh tet (traditional Vietnamese rice cakes), making com lam (traditional Vietnamese rice cooked in bamboo tubes) – local culinary specialties – and enjoying many delicious and novel dishes.
