Fields of study in modern society
Globally, psychology officially became an independent science in 1879. From a very early stage, this science, which intersects natural and social sciences, emerged due to the need to study and understand the dynamics of human thought, emotion, and psychology under the influence of natural and social factors.
Leading universities around the world, from the US, France, the UK, and Australia to developed Asian countries, all consider psychology an indispensable part of their social sciences and humanities systems.
Associate Professor Dr. Trinh Thi Linh - Deputy Head of the Department of Psychology, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, explains: "Psychology is everything."cPsychology encompasses all phenomena of mental life, the inner world of human beings; it is closely linked to and governs all human activities. Psychology is a science that specializes in studying the mental phenomena of individuals and social groups, contributing to improving and enhancing the quality of human mental life. It is an interdisciplinary science and a science of modern society..
In fact, as society develops and life pressures increase, mental disorders and illnesses such as depression, autism, paranoia, anxiety, and loneliness become more common in developed countries.
This situation occurs regardless of age, gender, occupation, or educational level. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), by 2020, depression will be the second leading cause of human health problems, after cardiovascular disease.
Currently, 3%-5% of the world's population suffers from this condition. Half of all mental illnesses begin at age 14, but the majority go undetected or untreated. According to research by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), approximately 8%-29% of Vietnamese adolescents suffer from mental health problems.
According to several domestic studies, 87% of children in the study sample have psychological problems. It is estimated that in Vietnam, at least three million young people have mental health issues, but only about 20% of them receive the necessary medical support and treatment.
