Bach Thi Lam, a female student from Hamlet 13, Hoa Hai Commune, Huong Khe District, Ha Tinh Province, lost her father in the 4th grade. Her mother is blind in one eye from working as a hired laborer, and her family's circumstances are very difficult, resulting in her weighing only 34 kg despite being 18 years old. Despite this, she has been an excellent student for 12 consecutive years and won third prize in the Ha Tinh province's History competition for gifted students.
In addition to waiving tuition fees, the leaders of Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) have decided to grant Lam a scholarship and provide dormitory accommodation if she is admitted and decides to study at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities.
Professor Hoang Anh Tuan (Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities - Vietnam National University, Hanoi) said that, in accordance with the very humane policy of the Director of Vietnam National University, Hanoi regarding the case of candidate Lam, the university is willing to welcome and support her to the fullest extent if she truly wishes to study at the university.
“The school will also work with the dormitory management board of VNU to support candidates with free dormitory accommodation if they wish. If they study at the school, we will prioritize access to support resources, scholarships for underprivileged students, and other mobilized social support,” Mr. Tuan said.
According to Professor Hoang Anh Tuan, the support measures aim to alleviate the difficulties Lam faces in her studies, helping her confidently register for university admissions without excessive pressure from her family circumstances.
This afternoon (August 6th), Principal Hoang Anh Tuan contacted Bach Thi Lam on behalf of the school to encourage her to remain confident in pursuing her dream of attending university.

This is the house where Lam lived with her mother and younger brother before receiving 70 million VND in government assistance to rebuild it last year.
Bach Thi Lam (born in 2003, residing in Hamlet 13, Hoa Hai Commune, Huong Khe District, Ha Tinh Province), a 12th-grade student in class 12B1 at Ham Nghi High School, achieved 28.5 points in Block C (Literature 9.25 points; History 9.5 points; Geography 9.75 points). Along with 0.75 points for regional priority, Lam's total admission score reached 29.25 points.
With this score, Lam is the second-highest scoring student in the C group in Ha Tinh province and is also among the top 100 candidates nationwide in the C group (including 68 candidates who all achieved a score of 28.5).
Lam's first choice is to study Economic Law at Hanoi Law University. Her second choice is the Journalism Department at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Vietnam National University, Hanoi).
In the fourth grade, Lam's father suddenly passed away from a brain tumor, leaving a heavy burden and deep sorrow for the three of them. Even in the twelfth grade, Lam weighed only 34kg, her voice was hoarse and difficult to speak, but she lacked the means to see a doctor.
Ms. Thu, Lam's mother, was born in 1982. Seven years ago, while stripping bark from acacia trees, she was pricked in the eye by a thorn from a tree in the acacia plantation. Since then, her right eye has been completely blind, unable to see any light. Her health has also deteriorated, and she frequently suffers from seizures.
Mr. Bach Dinh Han, Secretary of the Party branch of Hamlet 13, expressed: “Previously, the mother and her two children lived in a dilapidated house. During the flood season, the house was swept away, and the whole village had to come out to salvage it and then use ropes to tie it back together to help the family. Last year, the government provided 70 million VND in support, and Ms. Thu borrowed another 50 million VND from the bank to build a new house. Now, she hasn't been able to repay the debt, and Ms. Thu's health is poor; she often has seizures. But her two children are well-behaved and excel in their studies. We hope that kindhearted people will help so that Lam can go to university.”
