International studies is a modern science both globally and in Vietnam.

International studies is a new educational trend worldwide, emerging primarily after the Cold War. This trend arose to meet the demand for developing multidisciplinary, open, and creative thinking and professional skills in the context of increasing international integration and the deepening internationalization of nations in all fields.

Professor Hoang Khac Nam, Head of the Department of International Studies, University of Social Sciences and Humanities - Vietnam National University, Hanoi, stated that today, International Studies is taught in many places around the world, especially in developed countries. This field of study holds an important position in the context of increasing intertwining between domestic and international life, and between the fields of economics, politics, culture, society, and the environment.

Because of this intertwined nature of reality, no one can explain any phenomena or problems with knowledge from only one discipline. Therefore, the need for multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary training has become urgent. International studies emerged precisely to meet this modern understanding and training requirement.

The Faculty of International Studies, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, is a pioneering unit in establishing the International Studies major since 1995. The Faculty's training program is built on four foundational knowledge blocks: politics, economics, socio-cultural studies, and law. From these four blocks, in their final year, students will receive in-depth training in specialized fields, namely:International relations, European studies, American studies, International development studies.

"International studies is a modern science both globally and in Vietnam. It's a dynamic field that demands open-minded thinking and creativity – essential for people living and working in today's internationally integrated environment," shared Professor Hoang Khac Nam.

Professor Hoang Khac Nam stated that students majoring in International Studies are trained in International Studies according to the following basic orientations:

Therefore, a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary approach is necessary to fully understand and resolve these issues.

It also enables students to work in various positions, agencies, and fields. While knowledge can be forgotten or become outdated, the way of thinking and reasoning, the ability to identify and solve problems, is the crucial asset for students to enter the workforce and thrive.

Every year, dozens of students have the opportunity to participate in exchange programs, study abroad, or attend conferences. This helps them adapt quickly to the workplace and allows them to pursue higher education abroad more easily after graduation.

International Studies graduates have a relatively fast job placement rate with a wide variety of positions available. The most common jobs for graduates are in international cooperation, human resources, PR... in foreign and Vietnamese companies; project or office work in non-governmental organizations and foreign organizations;

Specifically, careers include working as reporters or news editors specializing in foreign affairs in the field of journalism and media; working in international cooperation agencies at the central and local levels, in the foreign affairs departments of ministries and agencies; and researching and teaching international studies at research institutes and universities.
