Speaking about the reasons why the demand for learning, researching, and studying fields related to Korea is increasing in Vietnam, Dr. Luu Tuan Anh - Head of the Department of Korean Studies, Faculty of Oriental Studies, said: "The 'Miracle on the Han River' in the 1960s-1980s is a source of inspiration for small and medium-sized countries seeking experiences to develop their nations in the new context."

After South Korea and Vietnam established diplomatic relations in 1992, the relationship between the two countries has flourished in many areas, especially economics, education, and cultural exchange. South Korean investment in Vietnam has continuously increased in scale and quantity.

In addition, the success of promoting Korean culture through the Hallyu wave in Vietnam and other countries in the region must also be mentioned. All of these factors have quickly fostered a rapidly developing relationship, leading to a surge in demand among Vietnamese people for information about Korea.

To meet this need, Korean Studies was established, a scientific discipline that trains and researches the country and people of Korea, providing Vietnam with experts who are not only proficient in Korean but also possess comprehensive knowledge of Korea, and have the necessary skills to research and solve problems related to Korea.

As one of the first units to offer Korean Studies training in Vietnam since 1993, shortly after Vietnam and Korea officially established diplomatic relations, the Department of Korean Studies under the Faculty of Oriental Studies, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, is considered a leading and highly reputable unit in training Korean Studies as a branch of country studies and regional studies.

The Korean Studies program at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities provides fundamental knowledge of regional studies and Korean studies, focusing on equipping students with advanced Korean language proficiency (equivalent to level 5 on the current 6-level Korean language proficiency assessment system) and a system of specialized knowledge in Korean studies: history, culture, economics, politics, society, etc., of Korea.

Students are also equipped with knowledge related to Korean studies, primarily centered around the Korean language. This body of knowledge helps learners understand Korean with in-depth theoretical issues, thereby expanding their academic knowledge; applying this academic Korean knowledge to their professional work, improving their Korean language proficiency, and accessing materials in specialized fields such as history, economics, culture, politics, society, and career-oriented areas to serve their future careers.

"In terms of subject knowledge, students will be able to analyze fundamental, general, multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary knowledge about Korea such as geography, history, culture, economics, politics, and international relations in history and the present, comparing it with the case of Vietnam, other countries in the region and around the world; build, manage and operate professional activities related to Korean studies such as training, developing seminar programs, research projects for language and culture, promotional programs, business strategy analysis, and social surveys related to Korea," Dr. Luu Tuan Anh emphasized.

In addition, students are equipped with professional skills related to Korean Studies, along with other soft skills such as problem-solving and critical thinking skills; data and information synthesis and analysis skills; adaptability to changing living and working environments; planning and work organization skills; ability to complete tasks under psychological and time pressure; and teamwork skills.

A wide range of career opportunities awaits.

According to Dr. Luu Tuan Anh, the job positions that students can take on after graduation are very diverse: researcher, lecturer, specialist or translator/interpreter in government agencies, research institutes, cultural, educational, diplomatic, and commercial organizations; office secretary/external affairs assistant in state agencies, offices of Korean companies, joint ventures or Vietnamese companies, in charge of work related to Korea or the Korean language; editor at publishing houses with publications in Korean...

In recent years, the demand for students studying Korean Studies and fluent in Korean has increased significantly due to the investment of many large Korean corporations in Vietnam, such as Samsung, LG, and Hyundai. The criteria for companies selecting personnel are not only foreign language skills – specifically Korean – but also comprehensive knowledge of Korea, which is a strength of Korean Studies graduates from the University of Social Sciences and Humanities.

"In fact, over the years, Korean businesses have been hiring students from the Faculty for part-time work since their third year; by their fourth year and upon graduation, almost 100% of students quickly find employment," said Dr. Luu Tuan Anh.

Commenting on the future of Korean Studies students, Dr. Luu Tuan Anh stated: "In 2017, with the 'New Southern Policy' of President Moon Jae-in's administration, South Korea strengthened cooperation with ASEAN countries, with Vietnam at the center, becoming a gateway for South Korea to connect with Southeast Asian nations. The cooperative relationship between the two countries has developed more than ever before. This demonstrates the stability and long-term commitment in the relationship between the two nations. Therefore, choosing Korean Studies means students are choosing a promising and sustainable career future."
