Dr. Le Thi Bich Thuy (lecturer at the Faculty of German Language and Culture, University of Languages and International Studies, VNU) is one of the PhD students with excellent academic results and received a PhD degree from the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU on March 26. Dr. Le Thi Bich Thuy shared with the USSH website the joy, research achievements and valuable lessons she gained during her PhD studies.
The major I chose to study for my PhD and am still pursuing is Comparative Linguistics. The first goal of the PhD Program in Comparative Linguistics is to “provide PhD students with advanced and in-depth knowledge of linguistics, especially comparative and contrastive linguistics and related fields of interlanguage and intercultural studies, serving the research, teaching and management of interlanguage and intercultural linguistics”. That goal is consistent with my desire to expand my knowledge of comparative and contrastive linguistics so that I can conduct independent research in two languages, Vietnamese and German. I am currently teaching at the Faculty of German Language and Culture, University of Foreign Languages, VNU. German is the language used for teaching, so I understand this language quite well. Therefore, I want to take advantage of my strength of understanding German in my research activities. And only the major in Comparative Linguistics can help me satisfy my needs and exploit my existing potential.
The topic of my thesis is about the method of translating connotations in German questions. Thus, the topic is related to both linguistics (connotations and questions) and translation (translation methods). After completing the thesis, I have gained a lot of knowledge in the above fields.
The topic of my thesis is “Research on the method of translating the implications from German questions into Vietnamese” through examining the translations of “The big lady returns to visit” and “The billionaire returns to visit her hometown” by two translators Pham Thi Hoai and Le Chu Cau. My research mainly aims to identify the specific methods that have been applied to convey the implications in questions from German to Vietnamese in order to solve the difficulties in translation work, especially German-Vietnamese literary translation, as well as to improve the effectiveness of teaching and learning courses related to the field of Translation. The research results of the thesis are the methods that have been used by the two translators to translate conventional implications and conversational implications in German questions into Vietnamese and to evaluate the method of translating implications from German questions into Vietnamese.
The main objective of the topic is to find out the methods used by translators to transfer the meaning of the question from German to Vietnamese. To find and name those methods, I struggled and “groped” for a long time. But after “pointing out and naming” those methods, I felt quite satisfied because they really help my teaching work related to Translation subjects.

After completing my PhD, I found myself to have matured a lot in terms of scientific thinking and I also had more passion for scientific research. That helped my work at the Faculty, specifically writing better quality articles, being able to guide students in scientific research better and especially inspiring younger lecturers as well as students to "engage" in this difficult but also very interesting path. In addition, I trained myself to be disciplined, determined to pursue my goals and dare to face challenges, steadfastly following my choice.
