Official launching ceremony of “Bulgarian-Vietnamese Dictionary”: Contributing to enhancing friendship and cooperation between the two countries Vietnam - Bulgaria

The dictionary is a collaborative product between scientists from the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU and Veliko Tarnovo University (Bulgaria) within the framework of the official development assistance project of the government of the Republic of Bulgaria.

On April 12, 2023, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities held the official launching ceremony of the “Bun - Vietnamese Dictionary”. The ceremony was attended by Prof. Dr. Hoang Anh Tuan - Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dao Minh Truong - Vice Rector of the school, along with representatives of functional departments, leaders of the Faculty of Linguistics, lecturers and students of USSH.
The ceremony was honored to welcome Ms. Marinela Milcheva Petkova - Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Bulgaria to Vietnam; representatives of the Bulgaria - Vietnam Friendship Association; Prof. Dr. Hristo Bondzholov - Rector of Veliko Tarnovo University, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vladimir Vladov - Deputy Head of the Faculty of Linguistics, Veliko Tarnovo University.
The launch was attended by a group of authors from Veliko Tarnovo University (Bulgaria) and the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, scientists from the Institute of Linguistics, the Vietnam Linguistics Association and the Vietnam Institute of Dictionary and Encyclopedia, representatives of many press and media agencies, lecturers and students interested in the event.
Prof. Dr. Hoang Anh Tuan - Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU emphasized that the Bun - Viet Dictionary will further promote the relationship between the two countries in all fields.
Speaking at the ceremony, Prof. Dr. Hoang Anh Tuan - Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU sincerely thanked the cooperation and support of the Bulgarian Embassy in Vietnam and scientists for their active companionship since the launch of the translation project until now. “Today's result marks the fact that a dictionary of a non-common language has been revised, supplemented and republished in Vietnam after its first publication in 1984. Vietnam and Bulgaria have a traditional and friendly relationship. More than 70 years ago, Bulgaria was one of the first countries in the world to recognize and officially establish diplomatic relations with the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, the predecessor of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam today. Bulgaria is also one of the EU countries leading the way in ratifying the Framework Agreement on Comprehensive Partnership and Cooperation with Vietnam. On the basis of this good relationship, the dictionary will further promote the relationship between the two countries not only in the fields of culture and education but also in all aspects of politics, diplomacy, economics, trade, science and technology…” - Prof. Dr. Hoang Anh Tuan said.
The President of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities emphasized that with its historical tradition and pioneering position in training and research in Social Sciences and Humanities in Vietnam, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities will continue to build and closely coordinate with the Bulgarian Embassy in Vietnam as well as scientists to promote cultural and educational cooperation activities between Vietnam and Bulgaria, because these are the most basic foundations for a sustainable partnership between the two countries.
Ms. Marinela Petkova - Bulgarian Ambassador to Vietnam highly appreciated the significance of the second edition of the Bulgarian - Vietnamese dictionary.
Bulgarian Ambassador to Vietnam - Ms. Marinela Petkova said that the Bulgarian - Vietnamese dictionary is the result of the close friendship between Bulgaria and Vietnam, based on understanding and respect, cooperation and mutual support. "The reprinting of the dictionary is not only the result of the long-standing tradition between Bulgaria and Vietnam in the field of education but also a step forward to elevate the relationship between the two countries on the basis of the potential for mutually beneficial cooperation" - Ms. Marinela Petkova affirmed. The Bulgarian Ambassador to Vietnam especially expressed Bulgaria's gratitude to the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU, scientists and teachers of the school for their determination and enthusiasm to complete this meaningful work.
 
The Bun-Vietnamese dictionary will contribute to promoting sustainable cooperation between the two countries and open up many learning and research opportunities for lecturers and students of Vietnamese and Bulgarian universities.
“Bulgarian-Vietnamese Dictionary” is a collaborative product between scientists from the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU and Veliko Tarnovo University (Bulgaria) within the framework of the official development assistance project of the Government of the Republic of Bulgaria through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bulgaria (represented by the Embassy of Bulgaria) entitled: “Enhancing the quality of foreign language learning through the modernization of foreign language teaching tools”. Of which, 80% of the funding is sponsored by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bulgaria through the Official Development Assistance program of the Republic of Bulgaria (non-refundable aid) and the remaining 20% ​​from the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU. The compilers for the first edition in 1984 of the Bulgarian-Vietnamese dictionary include: Prof. Dr. Le Quang Thiem, Assoc. Prof. Han Van Khan and Assoc. Prof. Hoang Nam; The editors responsible for the second edition include Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Thi Minh Hoa and Corresponding Academician, Professor, Dr. Stoyan Burov.
Prof. Dr. Le Quang Thiem - one of the three authors who compiled the Bun - Vietnamese Dictionary (Old Edition), was extremely happy and grateful to be present at the event introducing and launching the Bun - Vietnamese Dictionary (New Edition) published in 2023 in Sofia - the capital of the People's Republic of Bulgaria.
 
Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Thi Minh Hoa and Corresponding Academician, Professor, Dr. Stoyan Burov - author of the second edition of the Bun - Vietnamese Dictionary received a bouquet of flowers in gratitude.
With its successful compilation and second edition, the Bun-Vietnamese Dictionary brings long-term positive contributions in many fields. Accordingly, the modernization and expansion of the vocabulary of the only Bun-Vietnamese dictionary will significantly and permanently improve the quality and effectiveness of teaching both languages ​​and will be widely used by both educational institutions and state agencies. This is also a new step towards deeper connections in the fields of education and science between the two countries. The reprinting of the dictionary also aims to fulfill the commitment of the Governments of Bulgaria and Vietnam within the framework of the Agreement on Cooperation in the Field of Education for the period 2019-2023 to support the learning and promotion of Bulgarian and Vietnamese languages ​​and literature at universities in the two countries. The presence of an updated dictionary will help to increase the interest of students from both countries in learning Bulgarian and Vietnamese, a growing trend in Bulgaria. And the reprinting of this dictionary will contribute to preserving and enriching the useful scientific work of the authors from 40 years ago.
Within the framework of the dictionary launch ceremony, there was an exchange between the authors and experts from Bulgaria and Vietnam as well as with the authors of the first edition. This was an opportunity for the authors and experts to share with readers the process of compiling and modernizing the dictionary.
“Improving the quality of foreign language learning through the modernization of foreign language teaching tools” is a significant cooperation project carried out by scientists from Bulgaria and Vietnam, which not only contributes to improving the research, teaching and training capacity of Bulgarian and Vietnamese languages ​​for lecturers, researchers and students of the two countries but also contributes to strengthening the educational relations and cultural exchange between Bulgaria and Vietnam in general.
The second edition of “Bun-Viet Dictionary” is a painstaking work completed in two years with the cooperation between a group of authors from the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU and leading scientists in the field of humanities and languages ​​of Bulgaria, creating a long-term and active partnership in the field of education, as well as student and lecturer exchanges of USSH with prestigious universities of Bulgaria.
