On December 15, 2023, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU-USSH) organized a training activity on preventing mental health problems for secondary and high school students in Son Duong district, Tuyen Quang province, with the participation of psychology experts.
This is one of the activities within the Project on Training in Preventing Mental Health Problems for Students, jointly organized by the University of Social Sciences and Humanities and the Gerda Henkel Stiftung Institute, Federal Republic of Germany.
Enhancing understanding, identification, and care of mental health for students in Tuyen Quang.
In Tuyen Quang, VNU-USSH psychology experts worked with nearly 350 students and teachers at Hong Thai Secondary School and nearly 700 students and teachers at Son Duong Ethnic Minority High School in Son Duong district.
During the training session, teachers and experts shared real-life situations encountered when communicating with students during adolescence, a period of significant psychological and physiological changes. They openly discussed the pressures of life and work, such as the pressure of achieving high scores in academic competitions and the responsibility of meeting educational targets. Sympathizing with the burnout experienced by teachers, the experts pointed out specific physical, emotional, behavioral, and cognitive manifestations to help teachers proactively improve and care for their personal mental health.

Through open discussions and sharing sessions with students from two schools in the mountainous district of Son Duong, Tuyen Quang, experts helped the students express their thoughts, feelings, and psychological pressures they face in life and studies, such as academic pressure, pressure to achieve high grades, and conflicts in social and family relationships.
According to Bui Thu Ha, a student in class 8B at Hong Thai Secondary School in Son Duong, Tuyen Quang, she and many other students sometimes face problems such as academic stress and pressure to achieve high grades. Some students have resorted to self-harm, suicidal thoughts, or negative reactions towards teachers, friends, and family. Besides subject teachers and homeroom teachers, students desperately need a reliable source of mental health professionals to share their concerns.

According to Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Thi Minh Hang - Director of the Center for Interdisciplinary Research in Social Sciences, with its position as a leading university in the country in the field of social sciences and humanities, and rich experience in implementing activities to care for, support, and provide psychological counseling to the community, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, has proposed and developed a project on training in preventing mental health issues for students for many years.
“With this project, we aim to enhance understanding and identification of mental health issues, and improve the problem-solving skills of teachers and parents among students. This will promote mental health care and preventative measures for mental health problems among students, providing them with the knowledge and skills to access mental health support services, especially for students in mountainous areas.”
Promoting community service activities in many localities across the country.
At the scientific seminar "Community Mental Health Care" organized by the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in March 2023, Deputy Minister of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs Nguyen Van Hoi highly appreciated the efforts and attention of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities and the Center for Interdisciplinary Research in Social Sciences in the field of mental health care. He affirmed that this also coincides with the concerns of the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs.
The Deputy Minister shared that mental health is a difficult, broad, and multidisciplinary field. Currently, on average, about 50% of the world's population experiences various mental health problems (from stress, anxiety, depression, autism, schizophrenia, paranoia, etc.). If not detected and treated promptly, it can lead to many consequences in terms of both health and socio-economic aspects. This is also a matter of great concern to the Party and the State, and many policies have been implemented to strengthen the protection, care, and improvement of people's health in the new context.

According to Professor Hoang Anh Tuan, Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, the university has recently assigned the Center for Interdisciplinary Research in Social Sciences – a hub of experts in psychology, social work, sociology, and many other interdisciplinary fields – to develop a project on community mental health care activities. Professor Hoang Anh Tuan emphasized that these activities should not be limited to purely academic teaching and research; all results should be implemented, applied, and used to serve the community.
The project on training students in preventing mental health problems was organized by the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, and the Gerda Henkel Stiftung Institute in many junior and senior high schools across the country, including Hoa Binh, Thanh Hoa, Ha Tinh, Quang Ninh, and Hanoi. Project experts visited many schools in mountainous areas and ethnic minority regions, where access to mental health care services remains difficult.
Furthermore, in 2022, the Interdisciplinary Center for Social Sciences of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, implemented a program of counseling and psychological therapy for nearly 1,000 students from HOPE School who lost their parents and relatives during the Covid-19 pandemic… This is one of the proofs of VNU-USSH's commitment to serving the community.
