In 2015, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, achieved many outstanding accomplishments in various areas of activity. These achievements reflect the continuous efforts of the entire staff, students, and trainees; and further affirm the correct steps taken by the University in the past year. The Center for Journalism and Communication Studies reviews 10 outstanding events of the University in the past year.

Ten outstanding events of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in 2015

1. The 27th Party Congress, term 2015-2020

The Congress took place over two days, April 9th ​​and 10th, 2015, with the participation of 157 delegates. The Congress discussed important issues regarding the University's development orientation for the 2015-2020 term, reaffirming the goal of becoming a leading research university in the country in social sciences and humanities, and striving to be among the top 100 universities in Asia by 2020.

The Congress also elected the Executive Committee of the Party Committee for the 27th term, with 14 members. Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Van Kim was elected as the Secretary of the University's Party Committee for the 2015-2020 term.

2. Celebrating 70 years of tradition and 20 years since the school's founding.

In 2015, the school organized many activities to celebrate its 70th anniversary and 20th anniversary, such as: a celebratory arts competition, press conferences, a thematic exhibition "My School," and numerous domestic and international seminars. The 70th anniversary and 20th anniversary celebration was held solemnly on October 6, 2015, at the National Convention Center. At the ceremony, on behalf of the Party and Government, Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam awarded the school the First Class Labor Medal for the second time, recognizing its achievements and contributions to the country's development.

2015 was also the year many faculties celebrated their founding anniversaries, such as: the Faculty of Journalism and Communication celebrating its 25th anniversary and receiving the Third-Class Labor Medal; the Faculty of International Studies, the Faculty of Oriental Studies, and the Faculty of Tourism Studies all celebrating their 20th anniversary.

3. Admission based on competency assessment

2015 was the first year the university admitted students to its training programs using a competency-based assessment method. This was a new examination method: candidates only needed to take a single test in one session; the knowledge was assessed on a computer, candidates took different test papers, and received their results immediately. This examination method received considerable attention and positive feedback from a large number of candidates.

4. Continue to successfully organize many major conferences.

The successful organization of numerous domestic and international conferences is a highlight of the university's scientific achievements in the past year. These conferences not only discussed theoretical scientific issues but also aimed at applying research results to solve practical problems in national development, while seeking opportunities for international cooperation and creating networks for sharing within the domestic and international scientific community.

Some notable and highly acclaimed domestic and international conferences held last year include: Vietnamese Anthropology: History, Current Status and Prospects; The Maritime Silk Road and International Relations in the South China Sea: Current Status and Prospects; Building an Open Educational Resources Platform for Vietnamese Higher Education;...

5. Raising awareness about quality assurance work.

Recognizing the importance of accreditation in improving the quality of education, last year the School welcomed and organized many accreditation activities, specifically:

From October 14th to 16th, 2015, the external evaluation team of the ASEAN University Network (AUN) conducted an assessment of the Bachelor of Oriental Studies program.

Subsequently, from December 1st to 4th, 2015, the School worked with the external evaluation team from the Center for Educational Quality Accreditation, Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City, to implement the quality assessment program at the institutional level according to the quality accreditation standards of the Ministry of Education and Training.

In addition, over the past year, the University also conducted peer evaluations of the high-quality bachelor's degree programs in Management Science, Philosophy, and Literature.

6. Promulgate regulations on management decentralization and operational procedures at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi.

In order to implement administrative reforms and improve the quality and efficiency of activities, on September 14, 2015, the Rector of the University issued Decision No. 2173/QD-XHNV, Regulations on decentralization of management and operational procedures at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi.

The regulations are developed based on the application and concretization of legal documents of the State and regulations of VNU Hanoi to the fields of activity of the University.

The regulations consist of 20 chapters, categorizing management and operational procedures according to job content, not functional units.

7. Publication of the Journal of Social Sciences and Humanities

On May 11, 2015, the Ministry of Information and Communications issued license No. 155/GP-Ministry of Culture and Information, allowing the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi to publish the Journal of Social Sciences and Humanities. The journal publishes six issues a year, including one in English, each with 100 pages.

The journal serves as a forum for scientists to exchange and publish their research findings in the social sciences and humanities. The first issue was published to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the school's founding and the 20th anniversary of its establishment.

On January 13, 2016, the Ministry of Information and Communications issued license No. 16/GP-Ministry of Information and Communications, amending and supplementing the regulations in the press operating license. Accordingly, the University's journal will be allowed to publish two English-language issues per year, with the journal's content doubled to 200 pages per issue.

8. Appointment of a new Principal

On December 23, 2015, the Director of Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) signed Decision No. 5168/QD-VNU appointing Associate Professor Pham Quang Minh, Vice Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, to the position of Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, effective January 1, 2016.

The ceremony announcing the appointment of the Rector of the University was solemnly held on January 18, 2016, in the auditorium on the 8th floor of building E. At the ceremony, Rector Pham Quang Minh expressed gratitude for the contributions of previous generations of leaders and shared the University's vision for the next term, emphasizing the importance of building a professional, open, friendly, and fair university governance environment, thereby unleashing all resources, promoting creativity, and attracting talent.

9. Establish the Department of Anthropology

On September 29, 2015, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, announced the decision to establish the Faculty of Anthropology, bringing the total number of faculties under the University to 16.

The Faculty of Anthropology was established on the basis of the Department of Anthropology, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi. The Faculty's establishment plays a crucial role in training a team of anthropologists with high professional qualifications and ethical standards, meeting the human resource needs for the cause of innovation, industrialization, modernization, and international integration.

10. Humanities students with the Young Parliament project.

Last year, the school's youth participated in the Youth Parliament project. The project provided essential knowledge and skills about Parliament, organized simulated parliamentary sessions, and discussed several key policy issues of interest.

Outperforming hundreds of applicants from various universities, Dang Trung Anh, a student from the K58CLC cohort of the Faculty of Management Science, was honored to be selected as one of the eight most outstanding students to visit and learn from the British Parliament in the UK for 10 days. This is truly a valuable opportunity for students to challenge themselves, hone their skills, learn, and exchange ideas for their future careers.

The Young Parliament Project is organized by the National Assembly Office in collaboration with the British Embassy and the British Council in Vietnam.
