Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong Tam (Standing Committee Member of the Youth Union of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities) said: “This year’s conference has developed in both quantity and quality with more than 70 scientific research reports from 8 faculties in the university. The Organizing Committee has evaluated through 3 qualifying rounds: Round 1 selected 50 topics, round 2 selected 20 topics and round 3 selected 9 topics to participate in today’s report. The reports show the students’ interest and personal perspectives on practical issues related to their lives as well as to the work of the Union - Association and the youth movement”.

At the conference, the 9 best research topics were presented to the council and received criticism, questions and comments from both the council and the delegates. The jury evaluated and awarded 4 topics in 5 categories:Most impressive research topic;Best Survey;Excellent application value;Excellent solution;Excellent presentation.

Student Nguyen Thu Hao (Faculty of Sociology) with the topic "Awareness and behavior of cannabis use and factors related to cannabis use behavior of university students in Hanoi" received awards for 2 categories:Most impressive research topicand co-winnerExcellent presentation.

Cannabis is a banned substance in Vietnam but is still used by many young people, including students, but there has been no research topic in Vietnam on the current situation of young people, specifically students using cannabis. According to Hao's observations, many of these people are intellectuals, knowledgeable, and they believe that cannabis can be used as a support tool in the process of studying, working or entertaining. That has prompted him to find an answer to this problem. It is known that to carry out this topic, Hao has implemented the Participant Observation method on a group of students using cannabis in Hanoi to get practical results for the research.

Conquering a difficult topic, putting her heart and passion into it, with a confident presentation, the awards from 2 categories are truly worthy of what Nguyen Thu Hao showed.

To carry out the topic “Current reading culture of students”, the group of students Nguyen Minh Thuong, Nguyen Thi Thanh Huyen and Vu Thi Hong Ngoc (Faculty of Sociology) used the main method of surveying by questionnaire. The group of authors presented a picture of the current state of reading culture of students in the 4.0 era with specific numbers.

Accordingly, 67.8% of students surveyed spent 1-3 hours reading books; the rate of reading books and documents through multimedia is increasing; the main types of books and documents that students read are textbooks and Vietnamese books. In particular, the study also showed a positive relationship between cumulative grade point average (GPA) and the frequency of reading books of students. 55.6% of students with excellent GPA read books 1-3 times/week; 44.4% of students read books more than 3 times/week; no student with excellent GPA reads books less than once/week.

From there, the group of authors made recommendations on motivating students to read through: activities and competitions from class and school; applying technology to library book borrowing and returning activities; focusing on improving the capacity of library management staff; instructing students on how to read books correctly and effectively; changing the way books are presented to make them more attractive, with more graphics, images, and sounds...

Student Le Anh Minh (Faculty of Management Science) won the prizeExcellent application valuewith the topic "Identifying students' difficulties in distinguishing between activities of the Student Union at VNU". The study shows that the majority of students cannot distinguish between activities belonging to the Student Union and activities belonging to the Youth Union, especially for first-year students. From the above reality, you make recommendations on changing the way of communication, the way of approaching students, the way of organizing and evaluating the management apparatus of the Union and the Association to clearly separate the scope of activities of the two organizations, avoiding overlap. The topic has received attention from both the Jury and students participating in the conference with lively exchanges and discussions.

Student Nguyen Thi Hai Yen (Faculty of Anthropology) won the prizeExcellent solutionwith the topic “Decision to have an abortion: Studying the experiences of couples living together in Trieu Khuc, Hanoi”. The topic explores the current situation and reasons behind the difficult decision for young people choosing to live together and uses the method of in-depth interviews.

During the research, you found that at least one of the couples is a student. The author pointed out that there are two main reasons why couples choose to live together. Firstly, living with a lover helps save costs in the context of finding a suitable roommate is very difficult and sharing a room with a stranger has many risks. Living together is a solution chosen by you in this case. Secondly, living together helps both parties get to know each other better. Most students agree that living together is a good idea and think that love and living together are two completely different things.

The author also pointed out two main groups of reasons that make couples decide to have an abortion: economic issues and socio-cultural factors. The decision to have an abortion is also influenced by gender stereotypes. Women are often the ones who suggest abortion first because getting pregnant and giving birth without being married will cause women to suffer greater consequences than men.

The “Green Torch” Student Research Conference aims to honor scientific research works of students with content that addresses practical issues for students, has applicability to the work of the Union - Association and the school’s youth movement; at the same time, helps to arouse and promote students’ creativity and interest in scientific research activities.
