The Harvard-Yenching Institute announces its Visiting Scholars Program.

Friday - May 17, 2019 15:43

For the 2020-21 academic year, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities was invited to nominate up to four of its most promising faculty members to apply for the program. In keeping with the mission of the Harvard-Yenching Institute, nominated scholars must work in the social sciences and humanities with a focus on cultural studies. The Institute seeks outstanding scholars whose work is more academic than applied. Scholars whose research focus is comparative studies, including one or more Asian countries, are particularly welcome.

After reviewing all applications, the Harvard-Yenching Institute will proceed with a focus group interview process. Additionally, while there is no age limit for applicants, preference is given to younger scholars in the early stages of their research careers.

Summary of the Visiting Scholars Program: This program provides faculty members in the social sciences and humanities (not limited to Chinese Studies or East Asian Studies) with the opportunity to study and conduct research for 10 months (August 2020 to May 2021) at Harvard University and/or other suitable universities.

Approximately 20 candidates are selected each year to serve as researchers at the Harvard-Yenching Institute and gain access to Harvard University's libraries and facilities. Scholars are provided with living expenses during their stay at the Institute. Applicants and stakeholders will be notified of the selection results by mid-February 2020. Selection criteria include English proficiency, academic background (including a doctorate in most cases), the quality and originality of the research proposal, demonstration of in-depth knowledge, and the feasibility of conducting the research at Harvard University and/or other major universities in the United States. In cases where applicants are equally qualified, preference is given to those who have not previously studied/researched at a US university.

Selected scholars work with faculty at Harvard and/or other appropriate universities and are required to present at least one public presentation in English on their proposed research project during their stay at the Institute.

The deadline for submitting applications is September 30, 2019.
