ASEAN Press: Comparative Perspectives

The first international workshop on "ASEAN Journalism: Comparative Perspectives" was organized by the Faculty of Journalism and Communication, University of Social Sciences and Humanities and the KAS Institute (Federal Republic of Germany) on October 19, 2016.

Attending the workshop were Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Quang Minh (Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities), Mr. Peter Girke (Head of KAS Representative Office in Vietnam), and Mr. Ho Quang Loi (Permanent Vice President of the Vietnam Journalists Association).

In addition, the workshop also featured speakers who are leading experts in journalism and communication from Vietnam and Southeast Asian countries, such as Dr. Bob Iskandar (Director of the ASEAN Federation of Journalists), Dr. Kalinga Seneviratne - Chulalongkorn University (Thailand), journalist Le Van Nghiem (Director of the Department of External Information, Ministry of Information and Communications), Dr. Ta Bich Loan (Vietnam Television), journalist Le Quoc Minh (Editor-in-Chief of Vietnamplus, Vietnam News Agency), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dang Thi Thu Huong (Head of the Faculty of Journalism and Communication)...

The workshop was divided into two sessions with the themes: ASEAN Journalism - Similarities and Differences; Challenges and Opportunities for Cooperation. The presentations contributed to an overview of the formation and development of ASEAN journalism; identified the fundamental similarities and differences between the press in each country; analyzed the ASEAN vision and the new challenges and opportunities for the press in each country and the region as a whole; and outlined ideas, goals, and methods of operation to help the press throughout ASEAN develop to a higher level and cooperate more closely for a prosperous ASEAN Community.

Associate Professor Pham Quang Minh delivered a speech at the conference.

In his opening remarks at the workshop, Associate Professor Pham Quang Minh emphasized the importance of journalism and media in building ASEAN in the spirit of "One Vision, One Community, One Identity." He stated that this workshop was a meaningful activity for scientists to share their perspectives, knowledge, and visions on ASEAN; and on the role and contributions of ASEAN journalism to the region's development. As a leading university in Vietnam, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities has the responsibility and honor to contribute to promoting close cooperation between scientists and media organizations in the region.

Mr. Peter Girke - Head Representative of KAS in Vietnam

Peter Girke, representing the KAS Institute, shared that journalism and media are a major focus and concern in KAS's ongoing programs. Journalism and media serve as a bridge between the government, authorities, and the people. It is crucial that media outlets demonstrate professionalism based on journalistic ethics and responsibility. This workshop provides an opportunity to examine different perspectives from ASEAN countries on how journalism and media operate to serve the community and the region.

Mr. Ho Quang Loi - Vice President of the Vietnam Journalists Association

Representing the Vietnam Journalists Association, Mr. Ho Quang Loi stated: In the context of the still complex regional and international situation, it is essential to enhance the role and responsibility of the ASEAN Federation of Journalists and ASEAN journalism in strengthening understanding among nations, promoting cooperation between countries, and upholding justice in resolving disputes and disagreements through peaceful means and in compliance with international law. ASEAN journalism, with its high responsibility, should guide public opinion towards positive values, contributing to the prosperous development of the ASEAN community and the international community. In this context, this conference is the first international scientific forum on ASEAN journalism in Vietnam, providing an opportunity for the scientific community to discuss and analyze the development of journalism in ASEAN countries from aspects such as development stages, political trends, social responsibility, opportunities for cooperation and development...

Following the opening session, the delegates listened to specific presentations such as:

- ASEAN press: an overview of its history and stages of development.

- Political trends in the press of ASEAN countries.

- The role of the press in the development of ASEAN communities.

- ASEAN media, regional thinking, and the use of new technologies to build a global voice.

- Challenges facing ASEAN journalism in the digital age.

- ASEAN press efforts to promote ASEAN: a perspective from the newspaper "World and Vietnam".

- International press cooperation within the ASEAN Vision 2025.

- Regarding television products for multinational audiences and the ASEAN Children's Festival model…
