The Association of Former Teachers of the School pays tribute to the people of Van Tho, Dai Tu, Thai Nguyen

Recently, on October 30, 2016, the Association of Former Teachers of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi organized a visit to Van Tho commune, Dai Tu district, Thai Nguyen province. This is the place that sheltered and helped teachers and students of the University of General Sciences, now the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, during the years of fighting against the US to save the country (1965-1969).

Attending the meeting, on the local leadership side, there were comrade Tran Duc Toan, Party Secretary, Chairman of the People's Council of the commune; comrade Nguyen Duc Hung, Standing Deputy Secretary, comrade Tran Van Hung, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of the commune, comrades representing departments, organizations and representatives of households with students who borrowed houses from 1965-1969.

On the side of the delegation of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, there were Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Kim, Party Secretary, Vice Principal of the University; Prof. Dr. Vu Duong Ninh, Chairman of the Association of Former Teachers; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dang Xuan Khang, Chairman of the Union and more than 70 former teachers of the University.

51 years ago (1965-1969), during the resistance war against the US to save the country, the US imperialists attacked the North, Hanoi University of Science was evacuated by the Party and the State to the Thai Nguyen war zone. During this time, the Party Committee and people of Van Tho commune shared, protected, and gave part of the accommodation for the teachers and the school to live and study.

Speaking at the meeting, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Kim, Party Secretary and Vice Rector of the University emphasized: This is a meaningful activity, marking an important milestone in the development of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities as well as Van Tho commune. This meeting was held on the occasion of preparing to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the two key departments of Literature and History of Hanoi National University, now the University of Social Sciences and Humanities.

On behalf of the Party Committee, the Board of Directors, and the staff of the School, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Kim sent his gratitude and thanks to the government and people of Van Tho commune.

It can be said that in the development journey of the University of General Sciences, now the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, the role, contribution, help and support of the people of Van Tho commune is indispensable.

During that time, teachers and students of the School not only fulfilled the responsibilities assigned by the Party and the State but also continued to train young intellectuals for the country, many sets of documents and textbooks were compiled.

After a period of development, the School has grown significantly. Currently, the School has 16 faculties, 13 centers and 1 research institute. 95% of the School's staff currently have postgraduate degrees. The School has hundreds of professors and more than 200 PhDs. Currently, the School is implementing dozens of state-level projects and more than 40 ministerial-level projects. The School has cooperation links with more than 200 international partners. Every year, the School welcomes more than 700 international students to study.

Prof. Dr. Vu Duong Ninh spoke at the meeting.

Unable to hide his nostalgia when returning to his old land, Professor and People's Teacher Vu Duong Ninh shared: "Remembering more than 50 years ago, we came here as young people. But today, our hair is gray, our steps are slow, but our hearts have not changed, like the first days we met the people."

"We still remember, in the atmosphere of the whole country entering the struggle against the US to save the country, we set out with a small backpack and some books here, and were taken care of and helped by the people. For 4-5 years, we have been attached to the people, to the fields and cassava fields. Thanks to that help, the teachers and students of the History and Literature Department, University of General Sciences have completed their tasks and continued to develop. Since the days of studying in Van Tho, many comrades have become members of the Communist Party of Vietnam, many comrades have become members of the Politburo. Van Tho land is a good place for birds to nest. The affection of our compatriots is the place that nurtures a whole generation to fulfill their duties to the country," said Professor, People's Teacher Vu Duong Ninh.

During the return visit to Van Tho, Dai Tu, Thai Nguyen, the School's Former Teachers Association presented some gifts to the commune and 16 students with excellent academic achievements in the locality.

The School's Former Teachers' Association also presented 70 gifts to representatives of families who had taken care of and supported the School's staff and lecturers during the period 1965-1969.

Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Kim and Prof., People's Teacher Vu Duong Ninh give gifts to children with good academic achievements in the locality.
