This morning, September 14, 2012, at the opening ceremony of the 2012-2013 academic year, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities was honored to welcome Comrade Truong Tan Sang - Member of the Politburo, President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.Also attending the ceremony were Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Quang Quy - Deputy Minister of Education and Training, Dr. Le Dinh Tien - Deputy Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Giang Son - Deputy Head of the Office of the President, Prof. Dr. Phung Huu Phu - Vice Chairman of the Central Theoretical Council; Prof. Dr. Mai Trong Nhuan - Director of Vietnam National University, Hanoi; along with leaders, staff, lecturers, and students of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities.Professor Nguyen Van Khanh (Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities), on behalf of the faculty, staff, and students of the University, expressed his honor in welcoming President Truong Tan Sang to visit and attend the Opening Ceremony. This event demonstrates the profound concern of the Party and the State for the development of the University in particular and the social sciences and humanities in Vietnam in general. Reporting to the President, Professor Nguyen Van Khanh emphasized that, with its long history, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities has always been a leader nationwide in training and scientific research, serving the development of the country. In the 2011-2012 academic year, the University achieved many outstanding achievements in training: after 5 years of transitioning from the semester-based to the credit-based system, the quality of training has increased significantly, with the percentage of good and excellent students in the past academic year reaching over 90%. In addition, the University has successfully and on schedule adjusted 22 undergraduate and 61 postgraduate training programs according to output standards, and has completed the development of 5 new training programs to meet social demands such as: Southeast Asian Studies, Public Relations, Anthropology, Film Arts, and American Studies. The scale of postgraduate training has been significantly expanded, accounting for 35% of the undergraduate training scale. To improve the quality of training, the University has extensively reformed the content and methods of teaching. With the prestige of a leading university in the field of social sciences and humanities, the University has attracted hundreds of international students. Also in the past academic year, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities achieved proud accomplishments in science and technology activities: approving more than 70 scientific projects, including many state-level projects and protocols; organizing dozens of international seminars and conferences with high interdisciplinary relevance; The university has published nearly 600 articles in journals and monographs; proposed recommendations and provided important scientific arguments in promoting historical values ​​and protecting national sovereignty, such as research on the Oc Eo culture of Southern Vietnam and proposals for research programs on the East Sea… With these achievements, in the past academic year, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities was awarded prestigious prizes by the Party and State, including 5 Ho Chi Minh Prizes and the State Prize for Science and Technology (accounting for 1/6 of the total awards given in 2012). Professor Nguyen Van Khanh believes that the achievements of the University, in addition to the efforts of the staff, lecturers, students and trainees, are also due to the close attention and guidance of the Party, State and Government.Speaking at the ceremony, President Truong Tan Sang expressed his joy at visiting and attending the opening ceremony of the new academic year at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities. On behalf of the Party and State leaders, the President warmly praised and congratulated the achievements that the staff, students, and trainees of the University have achieved in their development over the past period. President Truong Tan Sang highly appreciated the rich tradition and the great contributions of the University to the country's science, education, and training, affirming: "The University of Social Sciences and Humanities has gone through a long journey of continuous striving to become a leading training and research center in the country, with prestige in the region and the world in the fields of social sciences and humanities. The academic level and quality of training of the University have earned the trust of society and are highly appreciated by international friends and colleagues." Over 30,000 graduates, thousands of master's degree holders, and hundreds of doctoral degree holders trained by the University have worked creatively, dedicated themselves, and sacrificed for the independence, freedom, and unity of the Fatherland and the development of the country; many have become reputable scientists, managers, and socio-political activists. Several professors of the University have won high State awards in science and technology; and have been honored by several prestigious universities and scientific organizations around the world. President Truong Tan Sang also emphasized that, as scientific disciplines studying the movement and development of history, social relationships and structures, cultural values, the identity of our nation, and the essence of world culture, the social sciences and humanities bear an important responsibility in educating ideology, fostering patriotism and national pride, building social relations, and establishing moral values, standards, lifestyles, and the character of Vietnamese people. Therefore, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities has a great role and responsibility. The President suggested that, given the current need to improve the overall quality of education in the country, the University's top priority is to research and innovate the curriculum, content, teaching and learning methods, and the way exams, tests, and assessments are conducted to create interest, enthusiasm, and foster active and creative learning among students and trainees, cultivate moral qualities and lifestyles for students and trainees, and improve the quality of education in a comprehensive and substantive way. The University of Social Sciences and Humanities must be a leading institution, actively and effectively implementing the Party's resolutions, so that education and training truly become a top national priority and a driving force for the rapid and sustainable development of the country. President Truong Tan Sang added: “In recent years, there has been a situation where high school students are not interested in history, and in university entrance exams, there are quite a few zero scores in this subject, causing social concern about the lack of national history knowledge among the younger generation. I propose that the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, with its capabilities, should actively and effectively participate in solving this problem.” In addition, President Truong Tan Sang suggested that the University should strengthen and further improve the quality of its scientific research activities, including basic research on the history, culture, country, and people of Vietnam and other countries and regions around the world, providing scientific arguments for solving urgent problems arising from practical situations in the construction and protection of the Fatherland. President Truong Tan Sang hoped that the University would continue to produce many high-quality and valuable research works, worthy of its prestige and reputation. To effectively carry out the above tasks, President Truong Tan Sang also requested the University of Social Sciences and Humanities to pay special attention to building a team of staff, especially the teaching staff, which is the decisive force in creating the quality of training and the prestige of the University. The teachers of the University must be truly exemplary in talent, passion, sense of responsibility, moral character, and lifestyle, serving as role models for students and trainees to follow; the collective of leaders, managers, staff, and employees of the University must be truly united, close-knit, and supportive of each other in a spirit of camaraderie and collegiality. To the students and trainees, President Truong Tan Sang urged: “Be proud to be students, graduate students, and doctoral candidates of a university with a long and leading tradition in the country. You must strive to study and train well so that you can become good cadres and contribute to society in the future.”
