From August 11th to 17th, 2012, the Vietnam-Korea Friendship Association of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Vietnam National University, Hanoi) collaborated with Korean charitable organizations to participate in volunteer activities in Thanh Hoa, Vietnam. The volunteer group consisted of 50 people from 4 organizations. From South Korea, the group included the Gumi Province Dream Fulfillment Group, the Maha Council for Supporting Migrants, and Soonchunhyang Hospital in Gumi Province. From Vietnam, there were 9 interpreters, including 2 students from Hanoi University and 7 from the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (of which 4 were trainees and 1 staff member from the Sejong Korean Language Center in Hanoi, and 2 were full-time students). The group's activities were divided into 3 teams: The Gumi Province Dream Fulfillment Group, led by Venerable Chin O, ran a 108km marathon in Thanh Hoa to raise funds for building toilets in schools that lacked them. Prior to this, in January 2012, the group ran 500km in Vietnam (from Thai Nguyen to Thanh Hoa) to raise funds for charity. During the marathon (primarily through impoverished districts of Thai Nguyen and Thanh Hoa provinces), the monk and his group visited schools. If they found the toilets to be substandard, the group planned to provide 100% of the funds for rebuilding them. Currently, 108 toilets are being built in Thanh Hoa. The Council for Supporting Immigrants, the organizing unit, has a group of volunteers who painted the toilets built at three primary schools in three communes across Hoang Hoa, Trieu Son, and Ba Thuoc districts. Soonchunhyang Hospital has nurses and doctors providing free medical examinations, treatment, medication, soap, toothpaste, and toothbrushes to poor households in these areas. In addition, the group visited the Thanh Hoa Provincial Association for the Blind, distributing medication and providing computers and printers. On their way back to Hanoi, the group visited Huong Tich Pagoda, met with the abbot, and donated 1 million Won along with a rice cooker and medicine. This is a very useful and practical activity that contributes to strengthening the friendship between the people of South Korea and Vietnam.
