“North Central Coast commercial port system: "Potential, position and regional and inter-regional exchanges"

That was the theme of the Scientific Conference organized by the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi in collaboration with the Hanoi University of Culture on December 24, 2021. The conference was attended by the Board of Directors and experts of the two universities, along with researchers and scholars from the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences, the Vietnam National Institute of Culture and Arts, and the Departments of Culture, Sports and Tourism of the provinces in the North Central region.

The workshop aims to clarify the role, potential, driving force and development trends of the commercial port system; economic activities, and diplomatic relations of Vietnam in history and at present. The workshop aims at new, deeper and more comprehensive understandings of the commercial ports in the North Central region, in-depth research on the potential and strengths of each commercial port, social life, culture, role and position of the North Central commercial port system in regional and inter-regional relations.

Assoc.Prof.Dr. Dao Thanh Truong (Vice Rector of University of Social Sciences and Humanities) delivered the opening speech of the Workshop.

Specific contents discussed at the Workshop include: The formation and development process of the North Central Coast commercial port system through historical periods; concepts and theories of maritime economy; activities and routes of regional and international economic and trade exchanges; the position of the sea - ocean and the North Central Coast region with the development of the countries Dai Viet - Dai Nam - Vietnam; natural potential, natural resources and the role, activities and relationships of the North Central Coast commercial ports; cultural and social characteristics of the North Central Coast region.

Based on the analysis of the above issues, the Workshop made proposals and recommendations on the role of marine and island research in the successful implementation of the Vietnam Marine Strategy, and at the same time provided a number of solutions on preserving and promoting the value of marine cultural heritages.

Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Kim (Director of the Center for Seas and Islands, Head of the Department of Global History, Faculty of History, University of Social Sciences and Humanities) presented a paper "Some thoughts on the role and typical characteristics of the North Central Coastal Sea space"

After the opening session, the Workshop took place with 2 sessions:

Plenary Session: North Central Coast Port System: Context, Potential, Position

Session 2 with 2 sub-committees: North Central Coast port system: Economic activities and regional and inter-regional economic exchanges; North Central Coast port system: Cultural issues and cultural exchanges.

From a specialized and interdisciplinary approach, nearly 30 presentations at the Workshop exploited many new sources of information, including sources of information on archaeology, cultural studies, anthropological surveys, etc. to continue to clarify Vietnam's maritime traditions and the extensive regional and inter-regional connections of commercial ports, economic centers of the North Central region with markets, sources of goods, raw material areas from the Central Delta, the Truong Son - Tay Nguyen region and from Southeast Asian countries, Asia and the world.

In recent years, research on the North Central region and diplomatic activities and trade exchanges of the North Central region of Vietnam has achieved many important results.

There have been many articles, research works, theses, and research dissertations on the commercial port areas of Lach Truong, Lach Bang (Thanh Hoa); the ports of Hoi Thong, Ky Ninh, Ky Anh (Ha Tinh), Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Thua Thien Hue... published domestically and internationally.

In 2016, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU in collaboration with the Vietnam Historical Science Association organized a scientific conference: "Sea and continent - Role and exchange network in the Central River Basin".

In 2017, the International Conference: “The Central Port System with the “Silk Road on the Sea” - Roles and Relationships” was jointly organized by the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU and the People's Committee of Hoi An City.
