TTO - Online teaching and learning is not new. What is new is that in the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, this activity seemed like a temporary solution, but now it is different in the context of the pandemic's complicated developments...

A few days ago, flowers and street vendors in Hanoi seemed to be a sign of hope for a return to normal life.

I walked into the lecture hall, happily expecting to see my students again after many days. But that night, I received emails from the two universities where I was teaching, announcing that the school gates were closed again, and lecturers and students had to "meet" via online tools.

The next morning, I woke up to find more than 30 emails and many messages from students about the next study plan, about the deadline for submitting online essays, about the project we were discussing in class last week, about the reading materials and the next assignment requirements...

Thanks technology!

Anyway, after all the unexpected upheavals for me or any citizen living in this pandemic period, I have to thank technology for keeping me and those children from being unemployed and uneducated. The modern world has given us many options for delivering and transferring knowledge to learners.

The e-learning market is actually 22 years old. The concept was coined in 1998, the year Google launched. It has revolutionized the way we think and transfer knowledge quickly and conveniently. Teachers are no longer confined to the ivory tower, their knowledge can be shared outside the classroom.

A study predicts that the global e-learning market could reach $325 billion by 2025. Universities around the world have been using this platform to supplement and support traditional teaching methods for many years. Digital platforms help learners build more opportunities to express themselves, their ideas and thoughts.

One of the teaching and improvisation methods of most universities in Vietnam during this pandemic is to change the teaching platform and method.

Many universities are constantly training teachers to apply teaching platforms in almost every field, from law and accounting to human sciences such as psychology and sociology or history. Online learning is a great alternative to traditional universities at this sensitive time.

Serious about online learning

Learners have the opportunity to learn and practice independence and digital skills. We can make schools relevant to the current and future needs of the digital generation.

There are more than 14 million children born into the multi-tasking generation with digital instincts in Vietnam. In a volatile society, a society where students are born with the Internet, it is time to take online learning seriously.

A pandemic or crisis will make us look at and equip ourselves with better survival skills. Having knowledge is also having a sense of community. Technology is not a silver bullet, but a means to perfect citizen support.

By shifting to a new digitally-powered education system, the role of the teacher is different from the traditional one but no less important. We can still help learners realize their wildest hopes and dreams through the wisest acquisition of knowledge.

We are teaching tomorrow's skills today.

As a teacher, I can remember hands going up in class. Fields that are more hands-on like mine can be more challenging.

However, at the present time, it is an addition and extension of the classical forms of learning. I started to spend more time interacting with students via the Internet, as well as preparing more before each online lecture or online support.
