Research and training in social sciences and humanities in Vietnam

As part of a series of activities celebrating the 65th anniversary of the tradition of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, a scientific conference with the theme "Research and training in Social Sciences and Humanities in Vietnam: Achievements and experiences" was held on November 15.

As part of a series of activities celebrating the 65th anniversary of the tradition of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, a scientific conference with the theme "Research and training in Social Sciences and Humanities in Vietnam: Achievements and experiences" was held on November 15.Attending the workshop were Prof. Dr. Vu Minh Giang - Vice President of VNU, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Khanh - Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, and scientists from agencies, research institutes and universities in the country. On behalf of the University's leaders, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Khanh - Rector of the University delivered a speech declaring the opening of the workshop. In the introductory report, the Rector reviewed the important historical milestones, research and training achievements of the University since its establishment until now. The Rector emphasized that the University has determined the goal: "Taking basic science and long-standing traditions as the foundation, taking modern and high-quality knowledge as the destination". In addition, through valuable historical documents, the research of Assoc. Prof. Le Mau Han shows that the formation and development process of the University of Literature (the predecessor of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities today) is closely linked to the history of national development. The potential and capacity of training in Social Sciences and Humanities has been affirmed from the past until now.

With 2 subcommittees, the workshop focused on discussing and exchanging on the issue of training in social sciences and humanities, trends, opportunities and challenges of social sciences and humanities in Vietnam. Regarding the training field of the University, there were 24 papers sent to the workshop to discuss and exchange on this issue. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Xuan Hang in the report "Thoughts on training thinking during the time of the University of Literature". From the research on the training program and training methods of the University of Literature 65 years ago, he gave some comments and thoughts on the current training program and training methods. Some other reports focused on specific majors such as the report: Scientific research and training of the Department of Ancient and Medieval Vietnamese History (Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vu Van Quan) introduced in detail the structure and staff of the Department, some achievements in scientific research and training; some experiences in building and developing the Department. And many other reports discuss the process of building and developing the training majors and specialties of the University such as: 35 years of research activities in the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thuy Van); 20 years of training and researching journalism and communication at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Associate Professor, Dr. Dinh Van Huong); Faculty of Oriental Studies: 15 years of formation and development (Associate Professor, Dr. Le Dinh Chinh)... Thereby, contributing to summarizing, evaluating, and drawing experience on the path of formation and development of the majors of Social Sciences and Humanities in Vietnam in general and the University in particular.

Trends, opportunities and challenges of Vietnamese social sciences and humanities in the context of international integration and globalization were the second issues discussed at this conference. 23 presentations not only focused on discussing opportunities and challenges but also exchanged and proposed solutions to strengthen cooperation and develop training links between universities, research institutes, agencies and enterprises. A typical example is the report "Main tasks of higher education institutions in social sciences and humanities in the period 2010 - 2020" (Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Van Quyet) which raised specific tasks for current and future social sciences and humanities training and education. Along with that, strategic solutions were also raised: the social sciences and humanities need to create more breakthroughs in training quality, link scientific research with quality improvement, focus on improving professional qualifications, pedagogy and foreign language skills for teaching staff... The workshop summarized and evaluated the achievements and roles of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities - the country's leading training and research center since its establishment. From there, it contributed to clarifying and understanding more about the achievements and development path of both social sciences and humanities.
