On June 7, 2012, Associate Professor Pham Quang Minh (Vice Rector of the university) met and worked with Mr. Tran Ba Tu (Deputy Head of Representative Office) and Mr. Truong Phuc Hang (First Secretary) of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office. Also present were representatives from the Science Department, the Faculty of Oriental Studies, the Faculty of Linguistics, and the Faculty of Vietnamese Studies and Vietnamese Language.Mr. Tran Ba Tu stated that the Vietnamese community in Taiwan is currently quite large, ranking fourth in the world. Furthermore, the development of economic exchanges between the two countries has fueled the demand for learning about Vietnamese culture and language in Taiwan. Taiwanese universities are increasingly interested in developing research programs on Vietnam. However, in reality, while there are many exchanges between Vietnamese and Taiwanese universities, the concrete cooperation programs realized have not lived up to their potential. Based on this, the representative from the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office suggested the need to quickly promote the implementation of more specific and practical cooperation directions, primarily by strengthening the exchange of teachers of culture and language between the University of Social Sciences and Humanities and Taiwanese universities. Agreeing with the above viewpoint, Associate Professor Pham Quang Minh affirmed the University of Social Sciences and Humanities' interest in promoting cooperation with Taiwanese universities and expressed his hope that "the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office will be an important and effective bridge to develop this cooperative relationship." Associate Professor Pham Quang Minh also suggested that the cooperative relationship between the two sides needs to be unified, focused, and formalized through official memoranda of understanding. At the meeting, representatives from the University of Social Sciences and Humanities initially put forward specific proposals to the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office, such as: acting as a liaison between the University and several universities in Taipei interested in researching Vietnam to establish cooperative relationships; facilitating student and faculty exchanges between the two sides; establishing a joint research program between the University and Taiwanese research institutes on economic and social issues of mutual interest in Taiwan and Vietnam; Providing scholarships for Vietnamese students and trainees to study at universities in Taiwan.
