The workshop on interdisciplinary research in social sciences and humanities took place with the participation of many Vietnamese and French scientists. From many different perspectives, based on research experience in different fields, 40 papers submitted to the workshop are the most concise and heartfelt sharing of experts on one of the necessary and inevitable research trends in social sciences and humanities.
In the report “Using interdisciplinary methods in regional literature research”, author Tran Thuc Viet (University of Social Sciences and Humanities) began the article by giving the most general concept of interdisciplinary research. This is the basis for the author to continue to have in-depth analysis of the interdisciplinary approach to the Southeast Asian Literature major. According to him, “interdisciplinary research is interdisciplinary research, a combination of subjects and disciplines”. It is the synthesis of knowledge from many fields and disciplines, the process of linking, establishing mutual relationships, regulating and influencing each other between the methods and processes of many different experts. Therefore, interdisciplinary research is different from specialized approaches in using methods and processes of many disciplines separately and independently.
From a psychological perspective, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Huu Thu defines an interdisciplinary approach in science as a way of organizing and conducting research using the viewpoints, knowledge and research methods of a group of experts from different fields to solve problems in the most comprehensive, objective and effective way.
In addition, many other analyses also stated that specialized science has made strong progress since the 18th century but also revealed shortcomings in the overall and systematic assessment of objects and phenomena. Therefore, by the 20th century, scientists raised the issue of interdisciplinary research with the perception that science needs to be open, linked, and interpenetrated to achieve a common goal in perceiving the research object.
One of the basic points of convergence in the statements of scientists at this conference is the agreement with the view that interdisciplinary research is an inevitable and necessary trend to increase the effectiveness of research activities.
Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Khanh (University of Social Sciences and Humanities) said that the role and importance of interdisciplinary in science comes from the need to solve problems of practical life. The world is in a context of strong integration and globalization, causing every economic crisis, an epidemic or a new scientific creation... to have a great impact on social life, the pace of development and security of mankind. Each invention in this field of science will lead to certain changes and impacts on other scientific fields. In many countries and governments, the organizational apparatus is established according to an inter-ministerial, multi-disciplinary and interdisciplinary mechanism to be able to give the fastest and most accurate responses to economic and social fluctuations. It is clear that no matter how strong a single scientific field is, it cannot thoroughly and comprehensively solve practical problems. It is in that context that interdisciplinary approach and interdisciplinary research in science become an inevitable trend and an advantage to overcome the above limitations.
Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Hai Ke (Faculty of History - University of Social Sciences and Humanities) brought to the conference a scientific report to prove that many famous research works of big names in Vietnamese science have become "classics" thanks to the use of interdisciplinary research methods and the integration of interdisciplinary scientific knowledge.
He mentioned the story that happened 10 years ago when VNU established the Center for Interdisciplinary Studies - Vietnamese History with Professor Tran Quoc Vuong as director. That was VNU's manifesto in action on interdisciplinary research. But it was not until then that social scientists, including Vietnamese historians, began to engage in interdisciplinary research. Furthermore, the generation of master researchers, the "founding" names of modern Vietnamese social science research in the fields of philosophy, history, culture... such as Nguyen Van Huyen, Dao Duy Anh, effectively used interdisciplinary research in their research works and became the first people to lay a solid foundation for this research method.
With vivid practical examples combined with a very deep knowledge of folk culture, Associate Professor Nguyen Hai Ke has proven that the way to apply comprehensive knowledge, the way to perceive phenomena in the totality of many different relationships has been deeply perceived by our ancestors and expressed through a treasure trove of ancient proverbs and folk songs. All of that has shown that the thinking about interdisciplinary research seems to have existed for a long time, very deeply in the life experience of our people.
He affirmed: “Interdisciplinary research is a need, an attribute of all social sciences and humanities, of Vietnamese historical and cultural sciences. This attribute is determined by objective factors, is the nature of the connection, the common relationship process between things and phenomena”.
Interdisciplinary approaches in research of specialized sciences is one of the topics presented by many delegates at this conference. Although in many different specialized fields such as Psychology, Culture, History or Education, the authors all shared their scientific arguments as well as their practical experiences in using interdisciplinary research methods in their own research fields.
Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Hong Con (Faculty of Linguistics - University of Social Sciences and Humanities) discussed the reality and prospects of interdisciplinary research in Vietnamese linguistics. Since the beginning of the 20th century, Vietnamese linguistics as a scientific discipline of Vietnamese has achieved great achievements in specialized research areas: Vietnamese phonetics, Vietnamese vocabulary, Vietnamese history... In addition, to solve theoretical and practical problems, Vietnamese linguists have expanded the scope of research and obtained remarkable initial results in interdisciplinary research areas such as psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, applied linguistics... The report not only summarizes the achievements of interdisciplinary research in Vietnamese linguistics but also proposes many directions for continuing interdisciplinary research directions of Vietnamese linguistics in the coming time.
Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Huu Thu stated: Interdisciplinary approach in psychological research is the most effective research trend in solving current social problems. He also gave specific analysis of interdisciplinary approaches in psychological research in 3 subject areas: individual, group and society.
Researcher Nguyen Thi Thuong, in her research on cultural studies, sees interdisciplinary as not simply a term indicating the interactive relationship between sciences. According to her, in the case of cultural studies, interdisciplinary represents the essential properties of this science. In other words, cultural studies itself is an interdisciplinary science.
Sharing the same viewpoint as above but applied to educational science, the article by researcher Trinh Van Minh provides analysis highlighting multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary characteristics as basic attributes of educational science, thereby contributing to outlining the very flexible boundaries of educational science with other sciences.
