High-quality higher education plays a particularly important role in the economic development of each country, especially in the context of economic competition and globalization. The University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Vietnam National University, Hanoi) has been transforming itself to integrate into the wave of international educational integration, while maintaining its unique identity and character deeply rooted in Vietnamese science and humanism…

Historical tradition - Modern knowledge

Inheriting the more than 60-year tradition of the Faculty of Literature and the more than 50-year tradition of Hanoi University, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities under the Vietnam National University, Hanoi, continues to maintain its position as a leading training and research center in the social sciences and humanities in Vietnam.

Among the nearly 20 undergraduate and almost 50 postgraduate programs currently offered by the university, there are fundamental, traditional fields such as Literature, History, Philosophy, and Linguistics, and fields associated with the names of founding professors such as Dang Thai Mai, Tran Van Giau, Dao Duy Anh, Tran Duc Thao, etc. These fields have built the university's reputation for over half a century and continue to affirm their position with the names of famous educators and scientists such as Dinh Xuan Lam, Phan Huy Le, Tran Quoc Vuong, Ha Van Tan, Hoang Nhu Mai, Le Dinh Ki, Nguyen Tai Can, Phan Cu De, Ha Minh Duc, etc. In addition, many modern fields have been and are being invested in and developed, creating a new, diverse identity for the university, such as Journalism and Communication, Oriental Studies, International Studies, Tourism Studies, Archival Studies, and Office Management… Many new fields are being offered for the first time, but have already attracted a large number of interested applicants, such as: Social work, Political science, Anthropology, and Vietnamese studies.

The University of Social Sciences and Humanities is one of the first higher education institutions in Vietnam to adopt the credit-based training system, creating interconnectedness and linkages between faculties within the university, between the university and member universities of the Vietnam National University, Hanoi, and between the university and international universities.

Students studying at the university have the opportunity to participate in international joint programs such as '2+2', '3+1', and '3.5+1.5'. This means that students will study at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities for one or two years, and then study at a foreign institution for the remainder of the course, before receiving their degree from the foreign institution.

Besides high-quality training programs that have been maintained for many years, such as Literature, Linguistics, History, Philosophy, and Management Science, several fields and specializations are receiving focused investment and development to meet international standards, such as Linguistics, Vietnamese History, and Ancient and Medieval Vietnamese History. These specializations are not only highly attractive to Vietnamese students but also draw many foreign students.

Currently, the university has nearly 13,000 students enrolled, including 25% postgraduate and doctoral students and nearly 600 international students.

In-depth research – Expanding integration and cooperation

The university's development strategy is to rapidly become a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research university; therefore, personnel management is considered one of the key tasks of the university.

Inheriting and building upon the achievements of the former Hanoi University, and following in the footsteps of generations of professors who have established the foundation of social sciences and humanities in Vietnam, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities continues to be one of the leading universities in the country in terms of the ratio of professors, PhDs, and senior lecturers to the total number of lecturers in the university. For every six teaching staff members, there is one Professor or Associate Professor, and for every three lecturers, there is one PhD or Doctor of Science. Of the nearly 400 lecturers currently at the university, almost 80% have postgraduate qualifications, and the remaining 20% are mostly pursuing master's degrees or doctoral studies.

The University's highly qualified, experienced, and dedicated teaching staff currently serves as a reliable team of experts, entrusted with leading numerous national-level scientific projects and international projects. Between 2007 and 2009 alone, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities was assigned to lead five state-level projects with total funding amounting to billions of VND, such as "Building and developing Vietnam's intellectual resources to serve the national revitalization in the 21st century," "The family issue in social development and social development management in Vietnam during the đổi mới (renovation) period," and "Basic characteristics of the people and culture of the Vietnamese community abroad today"...

In parallel with carrying out dozens of research projects commissioned by Vietnam National University, Hanoi, and various agencies, ministries, and sectors nationwide, the university also serves as the focal point for implementing numerous international projects with total funding reaching millions of USD, such as projects with the KAS Institute, the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation, the Ford Foundation, the Asia Foundation, UNICEF, Save the Children Sweden, and foundations from Japan and South Korea…

As one of Vietnam's key international exchange hubs in the social sciences and humanities, the University currently has cooperative relationships with nearly 100 universities, educational institutions, and international organizations, including many leading universities worldwide, such as Princeton University, University of California (USA), University of Paris 7, University of Toulouse 1 and 2 (France), Lomonosov Moscow State University (Russia), Humboldt University (Federal Republic of Germany), Tokyo National University (Japan), Seoul National University (South Korea), Peking University, Shanghai University (China), National University of Singapore, and many others.

Many conferences organized by the university have had a significant impact on academic circles both domestically and internationally, such as the Dien Bien Phu Conference - 50 Years in Retrospect, the 6th Inter-Asian Linguistics and Linguistics Conference, Towards an East Asian Community, One Hundred Years of Research and Teaching in Social Sciences and Humanities in Vietnam, Korea and Korean Studies in the Asia-Pacific Region, etc. These conferences have attracted hundreds of scholars from Vietnam and abroad to participate and share academic knowledge. International conferences not only provide opportunities for faculty and students to absorb up-to-date and modern international knowledge, but also allow international scholars to better understand Vietnam, the social sciences and humanities in our country, as well as the beauty of Vietnamese culture, land, and people in the trend of integration and development.

The successes in teaching, research, and international cooperation over the past years have contributed to making the University of Social Sciences and Humanities a place rich in tradition yet modern, dynamic, and intellectual. This serves as a solid foundation for the University to excellently fulfill the tasks assigned by the Party and the State, creating conditions for building a research university that effectively contributes to the industrialization and modernization of the country and international integration.
