Let's meet with VNU - USSH Media reporter Dr. Bui Van Tuan - Deputy Head of the Faculty of Vietnamese Studies and Vietnamese Language (University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU) to have a new perspective on the Vietnamese Studies major with its journey from Vietnam to international reach.
MC: Hello teacher! Could you please briefly introduce the Faculty of Vietnamese Studies and Vietnamese Language and the Vietnamese Studies major at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU? Vietnamese Studies is one of the oldest majors of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU. With 55 years of tradition and development, the Faculty of Vietnamese Studies and Vietnamese Language has truly become the focal point for organizing training and research activities on Vietnamese Studies in an interdisciplinary, regional and Vietnamese Language and Culture training direction for foreigners, closely linked with units inside and outside the school to promote the multidisciplinary and multi-field strengths of the school. With nearly 30 full-time lecturers who are Professors, Associate Professors, and PhDs, the Faculty also has the teaching cooperation of many lecturers who are scientists and leading experts in VNH from universities and research institutes in the country. In particular, the Faculty regularly invites leading experts in VNH from the country and internationally to give talks, creating opportunities for students to approach prominent issues of VNH in the country and in the world in the context of current global development and integration. In addition, during their studies at the Faculty, students also have the opportunity to learn and exchange with international students from dozens of countries who are studying Vietnamese, as well as postgraduates who come to conduct field research in Vietnam. More than 10,000 foreigners have studied Vietnamese language and Vietnamese culture at the Faculty as well as with the Faculty's teachers at many universities and Vietnamese studies centers around the world.
MC: At the Vietnamese Studies Department of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU, what will new students learn during their four years of study, sir? The Vietnam Studies major trains experts with a broad knowledge base about the country and people of Vietnam, who know how to work in an interdisciplinary environment and skillfully use multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research skills, finding the characteristics of each specific cultural and social space to serve the strategy of developing Vietnam's economy, society and culture. In recent years, training in Vietnamese studies has not only met the demand for high-quality human resources in the country but also contributed to training a significant number of Vietnamese studies experts from many countries and international organizations in the world. In the context of global development and integration, research and training on Vietnam has become an urgent need, on the one hand for the development and integration of Vietnam, on the other hand for the investment and cooperation process of countries and international organizations with Vietnam. MC: Sir, in addition to studying in the classroom, today's students are also very active and full of energy, always looking for environments and opportunities to improve their qualifications and skills? So what are the things that await students in the Vietnamese Studies department in particular and the Vietnamese Studies and Vietnamese Language department in general? The Faculty of Vietnamese Studies and Vietnamese Language as well as the University of Social Sciences and Humanities always create conditions and encourage students to improve and develop themselves with many different types of scholarships. Over the years, the school has continuously promoted cooperation with scholarship funds, agencies, organizations, and businesses at home and abroad to bring many scholarships to students with the goal of not only providing the best learning conditions but also creating motivation for students to strive throughout their time studying at the school, such as: AEON Scholarship, Annex, Asia Development Foundation-ADF, Dao Minh Quang Award, Yamada, ... In addition, every year the Faculty also connects with partners, businesses, and benefactors to award valedictorian scholarships to new students at the Opening Ceremony of the school year. Every year, the Faculty plans and organizes concentrated and non-concentrated internships at suitable internship facilities for students with a wide variety of internship facilities such as: research institutes or media and press agencies; travel companies or hotels; universities, Vietnamese language teaching centers, cultural sites and historical relics in many regions across the country. In addition, students studying Vietnamese Studies will have the opportunity to learn and expand relationships with international friends from different cultures. The Faculty has a special environment with a large number of foreign students, creating an environment for exchange, learning, and improving foreign languages and diverse cultural knowledge for students in the Faculty as well as organizing meetings and exchanges with employers and influential figures to create opportunities for connection, exchange and career orientation. Accordingly, the annual "International Cultural Festival" on the occasion of the New Year is an opportunity for Vietnamese students and foreign students to exchange and learn about the culture, cuisine and art of different countries. You will be able to try your hand at the Cultural Ambassadors Club - CMC with special support and exchange activities between the faculty's staff, lecturers, students and international students and lecturers through major activities such as: Cooking with CMC, VSL Pen Writing Contest, Vietnamese Sound, etc.
MC: Many people think that studying basic sciences like Vietnamese studies limits job opportunities. So what job opportunities will Vietnamese students at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities have, sir? In the past, when mentioning the Faculty of Vietnamese Studies and Vietnamese Language, many people often thought that students studying basic sciences would only be able to work in state agencies, historical museums, research institutes... This is true but no longer enough for the current generation of students and the Faculty of Vietnamese Studies. Coming to the Faculty of Vietnamese Studies, students will not only learn simple in-depth knowledge about the country, culture, people, and society of Vietnam, but also be trained in the necessary skills to create conditions for them to have multi-dimensional views on current issues and conditions in Vietnam. These are the necessary skills not only for future jobs but also necessary life skills in modern society.
