Summer Course 2023 with the theme “
Hanoi and the Red River Basin: Development, Climate Change Response, & the Right to Urban Life” by the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in cooperation with the University of Virginia (USA) took place from July 15 to August 12, 2023. In particular, 09 students from the Faculty of International Studies, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU were selected to participate in the course with international students. This is a valuable opportunity for them to interact with international students, improve their English skills, and expand their learning opportunities in a multicultural environment.

VNU-USSH students are confident in presenting in English with international students With the guidance of Professor Spencer Phillip and Dr. Ngo Huong from the Faculty of International Studies, University of Virginia, and lecturers from the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, the students learned and researched ecological, social and economic issues in the ecosystem and geography of Hanoi, in the Red River basin.
The course provides experiences through projects, applied research with GIS tools, system modeling, quantitative and qualitative research with the guidance of senior lecturers from two universities and experts from organizations in Vietnam.
During nearly 01 month of study, students have studied diverse topics such as: History, architecture, archaeology of Hanoi - Red River Basin, urban development and planning, climate change, river basin transport management, development and access to open space, solid waste management and water resources management, urban housing and migrant labor, communication in development...
International students were also very interested in practical activities in Ha Long and Moc Chau to research the topic “Sustainable tourism, ocean waste management” and the project “Clean water, development and culture of ethnic minorities, sustainable agriculture”.

Prof. Dr. Hoang Anh Tuan - Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU, is delighted with the success of the Summer Course 2023 and the next cooperation opportunity between the two universities. Speaking at the Closing Ceremony of the 2023 Summer Course for students of the University of Virginia, Prof. Dr. Hoang Anh Tuan - Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU highly appreciated the learning spirit of students of the University of Virginia as well as students of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in this course. Prof. Dr. Hoang Anh Tuan used the Vietnamese folk idiom "a day of meaning" to talk about the close relationship between VNU-USSH students and students of the University of Virginia over the past nearly 1 month. The lingering affection between students of the University of Virginia and students of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU made the atmosphere of the closing ceremony full of emotions.
Summer course has connected the affection of students from two universities in the United States and Vietnam.
The journey to explore the history and culture of Vietnam and Hanoi at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU by students from the University of Virginia (USA) has ended, but has opened up understanding and cultural exchange between students of the two universities as well as opportunities for cooperation between the two universities. And more than that, the image of talented Vietnamese students, hospitable and friendly Vietnamese people and the beautiful S-shaped country has been spread to friends around the world!
