Professor Iwatsuki Junichi (University of Tokyo) and his special affection for Hanoi Humanities

Admiration is the mutual feeling shared between the leaders of VNU University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU-USSH, and Professor Iwatsuki Junichi, from the University of Tokyo, in charge of the Japan Research Support Program.

At the meeting, Prof.Dr. Hoang Anh Tuan - Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU-Hanoi, expressed his gratitude for the great support of Prof. Iwatsuki Junichi for his academic contributions to the university over the years. His researches and achievements are not merely some gifts, but his love and devotion towards VNU-USSH and Vietnam.
Prof.Dr. Hoang Anh Tuan affirmed: VNU University of Social Sciences and Humanities is committed to the philosophy “Academia is the foundation, modernity is the trend”. Along with deep scientific research activities that have made the reputation of the “research university” of the university, innovative activities have contributed to shaping the position of the Humanities today: still academic but full of integration, still reverent but not disconnected from the contemporary digital university.
With nearly 96 undergraduate and postgraduate training programs, the curriculum structure of VNU-USSH has all the basic science majors equivalent to major universities in the world. In the new trend, the school promotes interdisciplinary training activities in all training programs, including the plan to open a new training program in Cinema and Public Art in 2024.
VNU-USSH is also a favored destination for many international students from various countries, accounting for 51% of foreign students studying at the Vietnam National University, Hanoi. VNU-USSH also promotes internship programs for VNU-USSH students in other countries, especially Southeast Asian countries and Japan. In the process, the university has received the support and cooperation of many reputable scientists domestically and internationally, especially Professor Iwatsuki Junichi.

Touched by the honest love from VNU-USSH, Professor Iwatsuki Junichi expressed his joy to have the opportunity to continue visiting and working directly at VNU University of Social Sciences and Humanities after a period of separation due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Upon his return to VNU-USSH, the professor hopes to further enhance the exchange and cooperation activities between the professor himself with the lecturers of the school as well as between the University of Tokyo and VNU University of Social Sciences and Humanities.
Professor Iwatsuki Junichi has had more than 30 years of experience in Vietnam in research activities on the Vietnamese language and culture, cooperation, and support for training activities at universities. Moreover, the professor has devoted a lot of enthusiasm to cooperation programs with VNU-USSH.
With the role of being in charge of Zensho-UT Japan Studies Program in VNU Hanoi, JSPH, (coordinated by Zensho Group, the University of Tokyo, and Vietnam National University, Hanoi), Professor Iwatsuki Junichi has made many contributions to the lasting relationship between the two prestigious educational organizations.
With the connection of Professor Iwatsuki Junichi, the scientists of the Oriental Studies Department have participated in the organization of the activities of the Journal of Japanese Studies - Hanoi. This is a research journal by the Japan Research Key Agency Program with the ISSN publishing code in the University of Tokyo’s publishing list. The journal emphasized on the idea of applying the independent peer-review regime with the desire to become a high-quality journal, publishing the latest research results of Japanese researchers from Vietnam, Japan, and the world. The release date of the first issue is to be expected in 2024. Starting operations in November 2011, the Zensho-UT Japan Studies Program in VNU Hanoi, JSPH aims to promote the development of Japanese studies in Vietnam and is one of the “Asian Talent Training Support” activities of the Zensho Group for the University of Tokyo. Currently, the program is in its third five-year phase at VNU University of Social Sciences and Humanities.
The program has actively supported the academic career of many lecturers, students, and postgraduate students of the Japanese Department and has achieved some specific results such as: equipping facilities, receiving postgraduate students studying at the University of Tokyo, organizing concentrated courses on Japan, organizing short-term internships at the University of Tokyo, inviting Vietnamese lecturers to research at the University of Tokyo, organizing library management seminars, organizing the Japan - Vietnam Research Seminar “Hanoi Rondo”, organizing reading hours about ethnology…
