Mental Health Issues Prevention Traning for Students: Applied academic research and service to the community

On December 15, 2023, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University (VNU-USSH) organized a training course to raise awareness and prevent mental health issues for students from Middle to High schools in Son Duong district, Tuyen Quang province under the guidance of psychologist experts.
This is one of the activities in the Project on Mental Health Issues Prevention Traning for Students jointly organized by the University of Social Sciences and Humanities and the Gerda Henkel Stiftung Institute, Germany.
Raise awareness, identify and enable better mental health care for students in Tuyen Quang
Coming to Tuyen Quang, VNU-USSH psychologists worked with nearly 350 students and teachers of Hong Thai Secondary School, and nearly 700 students and teachers of ATK Son Duong High School for Ethnic Minorities, Son Duong district.
At the session, teachers and VNU – USSH experts shared real-life situations when communicating with students such as: going through puberty through psychological changes, the pressures in life to be an excellent student, and the responsibility of completing educational targets. 
 
 
 
The training session by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thi Minh Hang received positive reviews from teachers at two schools in the mountainous districts of Son Duong and Tuyen Quang.

VNU – USSH experts helped students from the two schools express their thoughts, feelings, and hidden psychological burdens from everyday life such as academic pressure, and conflicts in social friends and family relationships.

According to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thi Minh Hang - Director of the Center for Interdisciplinary Research in Social Sciences, said that over the past many years, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU, Hanoi has proposed and developed various projects on Mental Health Issues Prevention Traning for Students.
“With this project, we hope to increase understanding and identification of mental health issues, as well as enhance skills to cope with pressure for students, teachers and parents. Thereby promoting psychological care and preventive measures for mental health problems for students, providing knowledge and skills to access mental health support services for students, especially those in mountainous areas”.
Promote community service activities in many localities across the country
At the scientific seminar "Community Mental Health Care" organized by the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in March 2023, Deputy Minister of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs Nguyen Van Hoi highly appreciated the efforts of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, as well as the Center for Interdisciplinary Research of Social Sciences in the field of mental health care. He affirmed that this also coincides with the concern of the Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs. Thus there will be many policies to strengthen the protection, care and improvement of people's health in the new situation.
According to Prof. Dr. Hoang Anh Tuan - Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU: The project " Mental Health Issues Prevention Traning for Students " has been organized by the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, and the Gerda Henkel Stiftung Institute in many Middle and High schoolsacross the country: Hoa Binh, Thanh Hoa, Ha Tinh, Quang Ninh, and Hanoi. Project experts have been going to many schools in mountainous areas and ethnic minority areas, where access to mental health care services is severely difficult.
 

In addition, in 2022, the Center for Interdisciplinary Research in Social Sciences of the University of VNU - USSH has implemented a counseling and psychotherapy program for nearly 1,000 HOPE students who lost their parents and relatives during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Center for Interdisciplinary Research in Social Sciences (CIRSS) is a unit under the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, established in 2020. The Center has two main functions: conducting research scientific research in a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary direction.
