Students of 5 universities participate in Summer school program held by USSH

The course gathers students from USSH, University of Zurich (Switzerland), Gadjah Mada University (Indonesia), Royal University Phnom Penh (Cambodia), Mandalay University (Myanmar), and Chiang Mai University (Thailand). The topic of the course is "urban change", signifying the transformation and development of Southeast Asia in the context of rapid urbanization. Its objectives are to create an interdisciplinary and international forum that combines theory and practice to demonstrate the "urban change" in social sciences in general and in Southeast Asia in particular. The course also introduces students to field research and generate enthusiam for ethnographic research, and practice the ability to engage in scholarly debates in English in a multilingual context.

At the opening class, Prof. Dr Pham Quang Minh (USSH's Rector) warmly welcomed the Vietnamese as well as foreign students. The Rector also introduced to them about Vietnam's historical, political, economic, cultural and social features, thereby providing them with different viewpoints and perspectives on Vietnam in the eyes of its international friends.

Theo lịch trình, khóa học sẽ kéo dài ba tuần bắt đầu từ ngày 2/7. Trong tuần đầu tiên, học viên tìm hiểu về quá trình thay đổi đô thị ở Việt Nam, các lý thuyết chính về thay đổi đô thị, các phương pháp nghiên cứu định tính. Cụ thể, thông qua bài giảng của Trường ĐHKHXH&NV và Đại học Zurich, học viên được giới thiệu về những góc nhìn lịch sử và hiện tại về thay đổi đô thị, sự di cư nông thôn - thành thị và sự phát triển của các khu vực ven đô. Trong tuần thứ hai và ba, học viên rèn luyện kỹ năng nghiên cứu dân tộc học thông qua khảo sát thực địa tại các khu vực quanh Hà Nội, thực hiện các bài tập theo nhóm. Cuối cùng, trong một hội thảo kéo dài hai ngày, học viên sẽ trình bày các kết quả nghiên cứu điền dã về thay đổi đô thị ở Việt Nam và đưa ra những so sánh với đất nước mình.   

As planned, the course would last for three weeks starting from July 2nd. In the first week, students will get an introduction into processes of urban change in Vietnam, central theories on urban change and qualitative research methods. The lecturers will present closely related ongoing research of the lecturers from USSH and University of Zurich. In the second and third weeks, students will train their skills in ethnographic research methods by
