Building research management skills for researchers in Vietnam

Tuesday - 29/05/2018 04:24
On May 21st-22nd, 2018, USSH and the Australian Research Management Society (ARMS) co-held the workshop "Building research management skills for researchers in Vietnam", which was supported by the Australian Embassy to Vietnam and Australia Unlimited.

Speaking at the workshop, Dr. Campbell Thompson (President of ARMS) said ARMS puts a strong emphasis on training research managers and is taking the leadership role in this activity in Southeast Asia. This workshop was held under the partnership between VNU and ARMS.

Prof. Dr Pham Quang Minh said the support and collaboration of its partners are important, especially as Vietnam entered the path of innovation and integration. USSH was grateful for cooperating with such a well-known organization as ARMS and hoped to someday become one of its members. The Rector also highly appreciated the contributions by USSH's Faculty of Management Science and IPAM in the innovation of Vietnam's science and technology. He hoped this event would be organized more regularly in Vietnam, so Vietnamese scientists and managers could gain experience and knowledge from the partners.

Mr. Craig Chittick (Australian Ambassador to Vietnam) said the Vietnam-Australia bilateral relations had been raised to the level of strategic partners. One of the areas concerning bilateral cooperation is research and innovation. Australia hopes to become the most helpful and closest friend of Vietnam, though not the only one. And not just between governments, but also among institutions such as universities, where the highest intellectual capacity is held. Therefore Australian government was really honored to support this partnership.

According to Mr. Nguyen Hoang Hai (Deputy President of Vietnamese Ministry of Science and Technology's State Agency of Science and Technology Innovation), in the context of globalization and industrial revolution, regional and global cooperation in research was increasing. To promote Vietnam's cooperation with the developed countries in different areas, Vietnamese managers have to improve their knowledge and skills to catch up with international standards. The foreign organizations play an important role in this process of renovation. The Vietnamese researchers can gain useful experiences through cooperation with organizations from Australia, New Zealand and Singapore, which would in turn contribute to Vietnam-Australia bilateral relations in the future.

Also on this occasion, Prof. Dr Pham Quang Minh and Dr. Campbell Thompson signed on the MOU between USSH and the Australian Research Management Society. The workshop took place between the 21st and 22nd of May, 2018.

The participants then listened to the main presentations by Dr. Mark Hochman (ARMS), Assoc. Prof. Dr Dao Thanh Truong (Dean of USSH's Faculty of Management Science, Vice Dean of IPAM), Dr. Bach Tan Sinh (Institute of Strategy and Policy for Science and Technology), and Prof. Dr Vu Cao Dam (President of the Council for Research and Training, IPAM).
