1. Purpose and scope of the thesis
Traditional Vietnamese medicine, from its early beginnings to the present day, has undergone many centuries of diverse developments in various fields such as: pharmacology, the medicinal properties of Vietnam, and methods of treating diseases (the eight methods).[1]Traditional medicine, along with modern medicine, has contributed to protecting and caring for people's health, including methods of maintaining good health, such as health preservation techniques, etc.
In traditional medicine, medicinal materials are one of the important factors. In our country, the source of medicinal materials is very rich, including herbs, animals, and minerals. Each type of medicinal material has a different name, properties, and uses.
From practical survival experiences, the ancestors of the Vietnamese people knew what plants, fruits, and animals to eat; they knew how to cultivate crops and raise livestock to create beneficial resources for the body, combining food with appropriate spices to remove odors and aid digestion; they knew how to brew alcohol for drinking and medicinal purposes; and they knew how to prepare poisons to defend against enemies (during the reign of King An Duong Vuong). Many medicinal herbs were gradually discovered (Pueraria lobata, Longan, Lychee, Tangerine, Apricot...), and many were exported to China: Coix lacryma-jobi, Quisqualis indica, Patchouli....
In Vietnam, the Imperial Medical Institute was established right from the time of independence (10th century), with the task of overseeing the examination and treatment of the king and officials, leading medicine and public health, under the direction of the Tế Sinh Đường and the Ty Lương.
The tradition of cultivating medicinal plants for disease prevention and treatment was continued by Hai Thuong Lan Ong Le Huu Trac (from Hai Duong province).
In the vast system of medical texts written in both Chinese and Nom scripts in Vietnam, medicinal plants also constitute a valuable body of medical knowledge. The Institute of Han Nom Studies (VNCHN) currently preserves a collection of these texts.General medicinal properties藥性歌藥性歌括With 7 volumes (VHv. 515, VHv.518, VHv.519, VHv.536, VNv. 274, VHb.209, VHv.1027) included in the system of traditional medicine texts, the work provides fundamental knowledge for those entering medicine, introduces Chinese pharmacology, and especially introduces Vietnamese medicinal herbs; demonstrating the learning, adaptation, and creativity of the Vietnamese people in the face of Chinese medical knowledge.
