Firstly, the thesis determines the nature of intersemiotic translation, distinguishes intersemiotic translation from other types/styles of translation, and affirms that intersemiotic translation is an interdisciplinary approach with potential in the study of art forms in general and literature and cinema in particular.
Second, the thesis points out the characteristics of inter-semiotic-intercultural translation from F. Dostoevsky's works to adapted films in terms of aesthetic images and art forms through three films by three directors from different Asian cultures.
Third, the thesis identifies the factors that govern the directors' translation strategies, which are cultural context and social issues, audience aesthetic tastes and directorial style. The translation mechanism is the free rewriting of the source text with localization strategy and cultural negotiation nature.
Fourth, the thesis proposes a model of inter-semiotic-intercultural transformation with the interactive mechanism of multi-valued parameters. This model can be used as a reference for studies on the transformation of works belonging to one art form and one culture into works belonging to another art form and another culture.
