Promoting cultural power in sustainable development

Wednesday - December 29, 2021 04:42
On December 29, 2021, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities organized a scientific conference on “Culture in Sustainable Development” in a combination of online and in-person formats. The conference was attended by cultural researchers, historians, cultural managers, etc. from many universities, research institutes, and management units.

Since its inception in the second half of the 1980s, sustainable development has become an issue of global importance, with three pillars outlined by international organizations and countries around the world: Economic development, social equity and environmental balance. However, from the beginning of the 21st century onwards, the world continues to face challenges in creativity, awareness, aesthetics, preservation of cultural values, and protection of cultural heritage. Therefore, UNESCO has proposed to consider culture as the fourth pillar of sustainable development, because culture is an important endogenous source of development, closely linked to all aspects of life and social activities.
With that meaning, the Workshop “Culture in Sustainable Development” was organized to create a forum for discussion on theoretical and practical issues of culture in relation to sustainable development. Specifically, the Workshop focused on clarifying the following contents: Theoretical issues, models and practices updated on sustainable development with culture as a pillar; theories, policies and laws of the Party and State on culture and sustainable development; issues of sustainable development approached from a cultural perspective in the following dimensions: history, architecture, festivals, heritage, community, etc.
In his opening speech, Prof. Dr. Hoang Anh Tuan (Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities) expressed his hope that the presentations at the conference would provide updated scientific insights into the development of culture and sustainable development in the current period. The conference is also an opportunity for the University to train and develop a team of teaching and research staff for the development of Cultural Studies, a new field of study established and implemented in recent years.
After the opening, the Workshop took place with a Plenary Session and a Sub-Committee Session with 2 topics: Cultural Heritage in Sustainable Development; Traditional and Contemporary Culture in Sustainable Development.
