The field of Sino-Vietnamese studies in Vietnamese universities was established in 1972 at the Faculty of Literature - Hanoi University (now the Faculty of Literature - University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi), amidst the most intense phase of the resistance war against the US, with the mission of training a team of people to collect, preserve, research, translate, and exploit Sino-Vietnamese heritage, preserving and promoting the cultural values of the nation, serving the revolutionary cause.
The emergence of the field of Sino-Vietnamese studies at that time demonstrated the special attention and foresight of the Party and the State, for the long-term future of the nation's culture and scholarship, ensuring that the future would not be interrupted by the thousand-year-old cultural heritage of our ancestors.
According to the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Vietnam National University, Hanoi): The task and mission of the Sino-Vietnamese Studies program is to train a team of people working in Sino-Vietnamese studies who are both proficient in Chinese and Vietnamese characters, and who master modern specialized and interdisciplinary research methods in Sino-Vietnamese studies; capable of exploiting and introducing the values of traditional culture, directly contributing to ensuring cultural continuity between tradition and modernity.

Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Van Thinh, former head of the Department of Sino-Vietnamese Studies, a veteran lecturer who has made significant contributions to the formation and development of the Sino-Vietnamese Studies field, expressed his belief and expectations for the development of the field with the spirit of "Sino-Vietnamese Culture". Graduates of the Sino-Vietnamese Studies program from the former Hanoi University and the current Hanoi University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Vietnam National University, Hanoi) are one of the leading forces working in Sino-Vietnamese studies nationwide at present.
Many generations of graduates in Sino-Vietnamese studies have become leading experts, producing outstanding research works on Sino-Vietnamese studies and traditional Vietnamese culture. Many have held and continue to hold important positions in research, teaching, media, diplomacy, heritage preservation, cultural management, and education management institutions.
Currently, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Vietnam National University, Hanoi) is a prestigious institution nationwide for training in Sino-Vietnamese studies, offering Bachelor's, Master's, and Doctoral degrees. Its mission is to be a pioneer in training and providing human resources with knowledge of Sino-Vietnamese studies for research and teaching institutions, preserving traditional heritage, and managing culture. At the same time, the Sino-Vietnamese studies department is also at the forefront of exploring, researching, and publishing Sino-Vietnamese heritage and other related issues.
The achievements in training and research in the field of Sino-Vietnamese studies have contributed to preserving and interpreting the written documents left by our ancestors from the past, helping present and future generations access the source of traditional culture. At the same time, it serves as a foundation for building a culture deeply rooted in national identity. In recent years, along with several other basic sciences, the field of Sino-Vietnamese studies has received mechanisms, policies, and resource investment from the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Vietnam National University, Hanoi). Particularly noteworthy are the policies supporting students, attracting and nurturing talent through individualized, "heartfelt" training aimed at cultivating highly qualified, dedicated, and committed human resources for Sino-Vietnamese studies and for the exploration and preservation of classical cultural values.
