Webometrics is an automatic ranking that evaluates the digital capacity and the level of diffusion and influence of academic resources of higher education institutions based on indicators of the level of diffusion and influence of website systems and online information (impact), openness of academic resources (openness) on Google Scholar, and scientific citation index on Scopus database system (excellence) of a higher education institution.

In the July 2021 ranking, VNU continued to maintain its No. 1 position in Vietnam and in the group of 1,000 best higher education institutions (position 959, up 41 places compared to the January 2021 ranking, position 220 in Asia and position 17 in Southeast Asia).
Also in this ranking period, the criteria increased dramatically.Impact(Level of influence) – from ranking 1651 in January 2021 to ranking 1289 in July 2021 – has shown the increase in the influence of the VNU website not only on the domestic and international academic community but also strongly impacting the whole society.
In this ranking period, Webometrics still maintains the same ranking method as in January 2021. Specifically, the criterion "Presence” (Amount of digital resources) has been eliminated in the ranking method, criteriaImpact(Level of influence) has the highest weight (50%), followed by the criterionExcellence(Excellence) has a weight of 40% and the criteriaOpenness(Academic openness) has a weight of 10%.
Previously in June 2021, VNU also received a lot of positive information from prestigious ranking organizations. On June 23, Times Higher Education - THE Magazine announced the World's Best Young Universities Rankings - Young University Rankings 2021. Accordingly, Vietnam has two representatives in this prestigious ranking: Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) (top 251 - 300) and Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City (VNU) (top 401+).
On June 9, 2021, QS World University Rankings 2022 ranked VNU in the 801-1000 group of the best universities in the world for the fourth consecutive time. Although it has continuously maintained this ranking group on the rankings, VNU's ranking points have increased, leading to a gradual improvement in its absolute ranking. Specifically, in the three previous rankings, VNU was in the 78.5% (2019), 74.9% (2020), 67.5% (2021) group of leading universities. In this ranking, VNU has risen to the 61.6% group of the world's leading universities.
On June 2, 2021, in the 2021 Asia University Rankings announced by Times Higher Education (THE Asia), VNU continued to be present for the second year in the 251-300 group, ranking first in Vietnam. Continuing to maintain its leading position in Vietnam for the second year in the THE Asia University Rankings 2021, with the highest total score among the three Vietnamese higher education institutions (26.9-29.6), VNU also had the highest score in 4/5 ranking criteria (Teaching, Research, Citations and International Outlook), while VNU-HCM had the highest score in the Income from Knowledge and Technology Transfer criterion.
