The Social Sciences ranking is compiled from various sub-disciplines such as: communication and media studies, political studies and international studies (including development studies), sociology, and geography. Compared to the 2021 THE World University Rankings by Subject, the Social Sciences ranking includes 870 (an increase of 79 compared to the 2020 ranking) ranked institutions. Among them, Vietnam has three institutions ranked in this field for the first time: Ton Duc Thang University, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, and Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City.
Thus, Times Higher Education has announced the ranking results for 10 out of 11 fields, with Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) being ranked in 4 fields:

- Physical Sciences ranked 601-800 in the world.
- Engineering: ranked 601-800 in the world.
- Computer Sciences is ranked 601-800 in the world.
- Social Sciences is ranked 501-600 in the world.
The World University Rankings by Subject is a ranking of universities by subject and subject area across 11 fields. The ranking results are based on five criteria: Citations, Industry Income, International Outlook, Research, and Teaching. THE used data from surveys (conducted by THE), the Scopus database (published by Elsevier), and data provided by higher education institutions to create the rankings, but the weighting was adjusted to suit each field.
