The opening ceremony of the 2025-2026 school year also marked the 80th anniversary of the education sector's tradition. This was the first time that all educational institutions nationwide raised the flag and sang the national anthem simultaneously during the opening ceremony of the new school year.
The University of Social Sciences and Humanities broadcast the opening ceremony held at the National Convention Center (Hanoi) live on VTV1 - Vietnam Television, with the participation of the university's leaders, staff, lecturers, and students.
Education and training play a particularly important role in the miraculous development of the nation.Attending the ceremony were: General Secretary To Lam; President Luong Cuong; Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh; National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man; Tran Cam Tu, Politburo member and Standing Secretary of the Party Central Committee; and Do Van Chien, Politburo member, Secretary of the Party Central Committee, and Chairman of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front.
Also attending were leaders and former leaders of the Party and State; leaders and former leaders of the Ministry of Education and Training from various periods; representatives of leaders from central committees, ministries, branches, agencies, and organizations; members of the National Council for Education and Human Resource Development, the State Council of Professors; ambassadors and representatives of countries and international organizations in Vietnam.

Eighty years ago today, just days after reading the Declaration of Independence, President Ho Chi Minh wrote a letter to students on the first day of school in the new Vietnam. The letter was a declaration on education and training, reflecting a vision for the future development of the country closely linked to education. September 5th has become a traditional day for the education sector, the day the whole country starts the new school year, a day of celebration for all citizens to send their children to school. Also on this occasion, eighty years ago, the Ministry of National Education, a member of the Provisional Government, was established. Since then, the Ministry of Education and Training has managed and led the entire sector, striving, maturing, and contributing to the development of the country over the past eighty years.
Throughout this journey, the education and training sector has continuously strived to overcome difficulties and innovate itself to contribute to the renewal and development of the country. It is a journey from a colonial education system to an independent, "completely Vietnamese" education system, gradually asserting itself on the world education map and striving to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the world's leading nations. This journey has been marked by the collective efforts, unwavering determination, and perseverance of the entire nation, under the leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam.
The immense contributions of the education sector have been affirmed by the Party and State leaders: "Our country has never had such a prosperous foundation as it does today, thanks in large part to the achievements and contributions of the education and training sector"; "The history of the Vietnamese revolution shows that education and training play a particularly important role in the miraculous development of the nation."

More than ever, we must view investment in education as an investment in the future, in the sustainable development and prosperity of the country.

The University of Social Sciences and Humanities upholds its traditions and core role in training and basic scientific research.Eighty years ago, on October 10, 1945, during a momentous historical period for the nation, President Ho Chi Minh signed Decree No. 45 establishing the Faculty of Literature – one of five faculties within the Vietnam National University and the predecessor of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities. On June 5, 1956, the Vietnamese Government issued Decision No. 2183 establishing Hanoi University on the basis of its predecessor institutions (University of Science, Faculty of Literature, University of Basic Sciences, and the Inter-regional Preparatory University IV), becoming the first university of basic sciences (natural sciences and social sciences and humanities) in North Vietnam immediately after peace was restored. In September 1995, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities was officially established, becoming an independent unit within the Vietnam National University, Hanoi.
Notably, President Ho Chi Minh signed the decree inaugurating the first course of the Vietnam National University - the predecessor of the current Vietnam National University, Hanoi - on November 15, 1945, and presided over the opening ceremony. At the ceremony, President Ho Chi Minh emphasized the role of knowledge and education in the nation-building process, affirming: "An ignorant nation is a weak nation." This admonition has become a guiding principle for many generations of teachers, students, and trainees of Vietnam National University, Hanoi in general and the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in particular.
Over its 80-year journey of development, with a mission to lead in training high-quality, highly skilled human resources; researching, creating, and disseminating knowledge in social sciences and humanities, serving the cause of national construction, defense, and international integration, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities has grown stronger and stronger, affirming its position and making important contributions to the remarkable development of the country's education system.
In 2025, the University seriously and effectively implemented Resolution No. 18-NQ/TW on reforming and streamlining the organizational structure of the political system for efficient and effective operation. This is considered an important step in the effort to improve the management and operation efficiency of the University, aiming for comprehensive reform. In the context of university autonomy and the country entering a new era, reforming the organizational structure, promoting the application of science and technology to enhance modern university governance; developing a team of outstanding scientists, quality management staff, and professional employees; investing all resources to successfully implement major scientific programs; and improving the quality of human resource training to meet the requirements of the country's socio-economic development and international integration. Affirming the role, position, and reputation of the University in the Vietnamese higher education system, it not only trains high-quality human resources for the country but also effectively fulfills its role in guiding and leading the development of social sciences and humanities, contributing to the development of Vietnam National University, Hanoi and serving the nation in the era of national progress.
