The Faculty of Anthropology (VNU-USSH) awarded the Phan Huu Dat and Nguyen Van Huyen prizes for the 2024-2025 academic year.

GDVN - On November 7th, the Faculty of Anthropology, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU-USSH) held the Phan Huu Dat Award and Nguyen Van Huyen Award Ceremony for outstanding students, trainees, and researchers for the 2024-2025 academic year.

This is an annual event of the Department of Anthropology aimed at encouraging and honoring the efforts and achievements in research, teaching, learning, and moral development of both faculty and students of the Department of Anthropology.
In the first semester of the 2024-2025 academic year alone, the Faculty of Anthropology, VNU-USSH, supported internships, practical training, and field exploration for 190 students with a total budget of 185 million VND.

The ceremony was attended by Ms. Phan Thi Huong Thuy, representing the family of the late Professor, Doctor, and People's Teacher Phan Huu Dat.

Also present were Associate Professor, Dr. Lam Ba Nam - President of the Vietnam Association of Ethnology and Anthropology; Dr. Tran Minh Hang - Deputy Director of the Institute of Ethnology, Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences; Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thi Thanh Binh - Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Ethnology, Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences; and Dr. Vu Truong Giang - Head of the Department of Party History, Political Academy Region I.

Representing the Faculty of Anthropology were the Dean, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Van Suu; the two Vice Deans, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Truong Giang and Dr. Nguyen Vu Hoang, along with faculty members and students from the department.

Phan Huu Dat Award FundEstablished in 2011 based on a voluntary contribution of 100 million VND from the late Professor, Doctor, and People's Teacher Phan Huu Dat.

Each year, the Fund will award 15 scholarships (worth 1 million VND each) to students majoring in Anthropology – formerly Ethnology (Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi) who achieve high results in their studies and scientific research.

Nguyen Van Huyen FundEstablished in 2020 by the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, based on contributions from the extended family of the late Professor Nguyen Van Huyen and the Nguyen Van Huyen Museum, the Fund aims to encourage postgraduate students and doctoral candidates in the Anthropology Department to conduct field research for their theses and dissertations, with the goal of becoming highly qualified anthropologists and contributing to the development of higher education and scientific research in the country.


Speaking at the ceremony, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Van Suu - Head of the Department of Anthropology, said that the Phan Huu Dat Award Fund is of immense importance to the Department of Anthropology, as it both inspires students and contributes to the strategy of supporting students and trainees at the Department over the past decade.

With a tradition of over 60 years of teaching and research, the Department of Anthropology clearly defines its strategy and vision to become an inspiring center for anthropology.

Accordingly, the Faculty has gradually internationalized its research and teaching activities, as well as equipped students with abundant knowledge and professional skills.

Over the past few years, the Faculty of Anthropology has consistently been at the forefront of innovation, improving the quality of teaching in line with international integration. In 2023, the Faculty's Anthropology program achieved the standards of the ASEAN University Network Quality Assurance (AUN-QA).

In addition, the Faculty continuously develops and effectively implements strategies to support students in their studies and scientific research. As of 2024, the Faculty has awarded a total of 116 scholarships to undergraduate students.

In 2020, on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Faculty of Anthropology, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, the Nguyen Van Huyen Fund was established to encourage postgraduate students and doctoral candidates of the faculty to conduct research and write theses and dissertations, aiming to become professional anthropologists with excellent expertise, contributing to the cause of protecting the Vietnamese Fatherland.

"In just two years (2022 and 2023), the Department of Anthropology spent over 100 million VND to support students, trainees, and postgraduate researchers in scientific research. These activities included scholarships to participate in ethnographic field training courses; scientific research awards for students; and key scientific research projects. Among these, there were 5 projects valued at 10 million VND each."

The Faculty also invested over 100 million VND from training support funds and basic science support funds to enable students to participate in internships, ethnographic field trips, and practical explorations to supplement the knowledge presented in lectures by professors in the classroom.

Meanwhile, according to Associate Professor Dr. Lam Ba Nam - President of the Vietnam Association of Ethnology and Anthropology, the Phan Huu Dat Award and the Nguyen Van Huyen Award have lasting influence and value, making a significant contribution to the future development of the field of Anthropology.

As a student of the late Professor Phan Huu Dat, Dr. Lam Ba Nam said that his teacher dedicated his entire life to contributing to Vietnamese ethnology and anthropology.

Accordingly, the late professor was the first person in Vietnam to compile a textbook on Fundamentals of Ethnology to be used as research and teaching material in universities nationwide. From the late 1990s, he continued to support and promote the transition from Ethnology to Anthropology in Vietnam to better meet the country's development needs and regional and international integration…

"Professor Phan Huu Dat made exceptionally important contributions, having a broad and profound influence on the formation and development of modern Vietnamese ethnology."

To this day, the role of Anthropology remains immensely important to the development of the nation.

The Phan Huu Dat and Nguyen Van Huyen awards are a testament to the legacy that great teachers and scientists in the fields of ethnology and anthropology in Vietnam wish to bestow upon future generations.

With that meaningful value, it is hoped that future generations of students and trainees of the Faculty of Anthropology, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, will continue to strive, work hard, and build upon the achievements of the Faculty of Anthropology. Constantly striving in the new century to meet the expectations and aspirations of our predecessors,” the President of the Vietnam Association of Ethnology and Anthropology conveyed to the students.

Representing the students, trainees, and researchers of the Faculty of Anthropology, Giap Thi Thu Thao, a student from the K67 Anthropology cohort, shared her thoughts and expressed gratitude to the late Professor, Doctor Phan Huu Dat for his immense contributions to the field of Vietnamese anthropology.

"For me, the Phan Huu Dat Award holds immense value as it bears the name of a great scientist, someone who has made a tremendous contribution to the country's science."

The image of the late professor has been and continues to be a source of inspiration for me and generations of Anthropology students, motivating us to pursue our passion and continuously dedicate ourselves to the national cause.

Today, having the good fortune to receive the Phan Huu Dat Award, I am deeply grateful to the professors and lecturers of the Anthropology Department for their guidance and support throughout this time, enabling me to achieve the best possible results in my studies.

In this meaningful moment, on behalf of the students, trainees, and researchers receiving the award, I would like to express my gratitude to the family of the late Professor and the Phan Huu Dat Award Foundation for bestowing this very meaningful award upon the students of the Anthropology Department.

"This is not just a financial gift, but also a symbol of knowledge, dedication, and love for science, giving us more motivation and spirit to strive to research and contribute to the field of Anthropology in Vietnam," shared student Giap Thi Thu Thao.
