Faculty of Anthropology (VNU-USSH) awards Phan Huu Dat and Nguyen Van Huyen prizes for the 2024-2025 academic year

GDVN - On November 7, the Faculty of Anthropology, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU-USSH) held the Phan Huu Dat Award Ceremony and Nguyen Van Huyen Award for the 2024-2025 academic year for outstanding students, trainees, and graduate students.

This is an annual activity of the Faculty of Anthropology to encourage and honor the efforts in research, teaching, learning and moral cultivation of both teachers and students of the Faculty of Anthropology.
In the first semester of the 2024-2025 school year alone, the Faculty of Anthropology, VNU-USSH supported internships, practical training, and practical exploration for 190 students with a total cost of 185 million VND.

Attending the ceremony was Ms. Phan Thi Huong Thuy - representative of the family of the late Professor, Doctor, People's Teacher Phan Huu Dat.

Also present were Associate Professor, Dr. Lam Ba Nam - President of the Vietnam Association of Ethnology and Anthropology; Dr. Tran Minh Hang - Deputy Director of the Institute of Ethnology, Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences; Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thi Thanh Binh - Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Ethnology, Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences and Dr. Vu Truong Giang - Head of the Department of Party History, Regional Political Academy I.

On the side of the Faculty of Anthropology, there was the participation of the Head of the Faculty, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Van Suu; 2 Deputy Heads of the Faculty, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Truong Giang and Dr. Nguyen Vu Hoang, along with teachers and students of the faculty.

Phan Huu Dat Award FundEstablished in 2011 on the basis of a voluntary contribution of 100 million VND from the late Professor, Doctor, People's Teacher Phan Huu Dat.

Every year, the Fund will award 15 scholarships (worth 1 million VND/scholarship) to students majoring in Anthropology - formerly known as Ethnology (University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi) with high results in study and scientific research.

Nguyen Van Huyen Fundwas established in 2020 by the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi on the basis of contributions from the extended family of the late Professor Nguyen Van Huyen and the Nguyen Van Huyen Museum. The purpose of the Fund is to encourage graduate students and postgraduate students of the Faculty of Anthropology to conduct field research for theses and dissertations, aiming to become anthropologists with good professional qualifications, contributing to the development of higher education and scientific research in the country.


Speaking at the ceremony, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Van Suu - Head of the Faculty of Anthropology said that the Phan Huu Dat Award Fund is extremely important to the Faculty of Anthropology as it both inspires learners and contributes to the implementation of the strategy of supporting students and trainees at the Faculty over the past decade.

With a tradition of more than 60 years of teaching and research, the Department of Anthropology clearly defines its strategy and vision to become an inspiring center for Anthropology.

Accordingly, the Faculty has gradually internationalized its research and teaching activities as well as equipped learners with abundant knowledge and professional skills.

In recent years, the Faculty of Anthropology has always been at the forefront of innovation, improving teaching quality towards international integration. In 2023, the Faculty's Anthropology training program met the standards of the ASEAN University Network for Quality Assurance (AUN-QA).

In addition, the Faculty continuously builds and effectively operates strategies to support learners in their learning and scientific research activities. As of 2024, the total number of scholarships awarded by the Faculty to undergraduate students is 116 awards.

In 2020, on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the tradition of the Faculty of Anthropology, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi announced the establishment of the Nguyen Van Huyen Fund to encourage graduate students and doctoral students of the faculty to conduct research and write theses and dissertations, aiming to become professional anthropologists with good expertise, contributing to the cause of defending the Vietnamese Fatherland.

"In 2 years alone (2022 and 2023), the Faculty of Anthropology has spent more than 100 million VND to support students, trainees and postgraduates in scientific research. These activities include scholarships to participate in ethnographic field skills training courses; scientific research awards for students; key scientific research topics. Of which, there are 5 topics worth 10 million VND/topic.

The Faculty also invested more than 100 million VND from training support funds and basic science support funds for students to participate in internships, ethnographic practice, and practical exploration to supplement knowledge for lectures in the classroom.

Meanwhile, according to Associate Professor Dr. Lam Ba Nam - President of the Vietnam Association of Ethnology and Anthropology, the Phan Huu Dat Award and the Nguyen Van Huyen Award have long-term influence and value, contributing significantly to the development of Anthropology in the future.

As a student of the late Professor Phan Huu Dat, Dr. Lam Ba Nam said that his teacher devoted his entire life to Vietnamese Ethnology and Anthropology.

Accordingly, the late professor was the first person in Vietnam to compile the Basic Ethnology textbook as a research and teaching material at universities nationwide. Since the late 1990s, he has continued to support and promote the process of converting Ethnology to Anthropology in Vietnam to better meet the country's development requirements, regional and international integration...

"Professor Phan Huu Dat is a person who has made particularly important contributions, had a wide and profound influence on the formation and development of modern Vietnamese Ethnology.

To this day, the role of Anthropology still plays an extremely important role in the development of the nation.

The Phan Huu Dat and Nguyen Van Huyen awards are the wishes of great teachers and scientists in the fields of ethnology and anthropology of Vietnam for future generations.

With that valuable meaning, it is hoped that generations of students and trainees of the Faculty of Anthropology, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi will continue to strive, try and continue the achievements of the Faculty of Anthropology. Constantly striving in the new century to meet the expectations and wishes of our predecessors", the President of the Vietnam Association of Ethnology and Anthropology sent a message to the students.

Representing students, trainees, and postgraduates of the Faculty of Anthropology, Giap Thi Thu Thao - student of K67 Anthropology shared and expressed gratitude to the late Professor, Dr. Phan Huu Dat for his great contributions to the field of Vietnamese Anthropology.

“For me, the Phan Huu Dat award has an extremely great value as it is named after a great scientist, a person who has made great contributions to the country's science.

The image of the late professor has been and is a source of inspiration for me as well as generations of students of the Faculty of Anthropology, motivating us to pursue our passion and constantly contribute to the national cause.

Today, when I was lucky enough to receive the Phan Huu Dat award, I am extremely grateful to the teachers of the Faculty of Anthropology who have guided and supported me throughout the past time so that I can achieve the best results in my studies.

At this meaningful moment, on behalf of the students, trainees, and graduate students receiving the award, I would like to thank the late Professor's family and the Phan Huu Dat Award Fund for giving the students of the Faculty of Anthropology this very meaningful award.

This is not only a financial gift but also a symbol of knowledge, dedication and love for science, so that we have more motivation and spirit to try to research and strive to contribute to the field of Anthropology in Vietnam", student Giap Thi Thu Thao shared.
