Professor Iwatsuki Junichi (University of Tokyo) expressed his special appreciation to the leaders, lecturers, and scientists of VNU-USSH.
At the reception this morning, February 28, 2024, Professor Hoang Anh Tuan, Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, expressed his gratitude for Professor Iwatsuki Junichi's immense support over the years for the university's research and training activities. This support is not only in the form of meaningful scientific gifts but also reflects the warm affection the professor has for VNU-USSH in particular and Vietnam in general.
Sharing at the meeting, Professor Hoang Anh Tuan stated that the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU-USSH, is steadfast in its philosophy of "Academic foundation, modernity as the trend." Along with the in-depth scientific research that has built the university's reputation as a "research university," its innovative activities have contributed to shaping the position of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities today: still deeply academic but highly integrated, still scholarly but not out of place in the contemporary digital university landscape. With nearly 96 undergraduate and postgraduate programs, the academic structure of VNU-USSH covers all the basic sciences equivalent to major universities worldwide. In the new trend, the university is promoting interdisciplinary training in all its programs, including the planned launch of a new Film and Popular Arts program in 2024.
VNU-USSH is also a destination for many international students from various countries, accounting for 51% of foreign students studying at Vietnam National University, Hanoi. The university is also promoting internships and practical training for VNU-USSH students in other countries, especially Southeast Asia and Japan. In this process, the university has received support and cooperation from many reputable domestic and international scientists, especially Professor Iwatsuki Junichi.

Sharing his thoughts at a cordial meeting with Professor Hoang Anh Tuan and the faculty of the Department of Oriental Studies, Professor Iwatsuki Junichi expressed his joy at being able to visit and work directly at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities again after a period of separation due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Returning to VNU-USSH, the professor hopes to further strengthen exchanges and cooperation between himself and the university's faculty, as well as between the University of Tokyo and the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi.
Professor Iwatsuki Junichi has been involved with Vietnam for over 30 years, conducting research on Vietnamese language and culture, and collaborating with and supporting training activities at universities. In particular, he has devoted significant effort to collaborative programs with the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi.
As the head of the Zensho-UT Japan Studies Program in VNU Hanoi (JSPH, a collaboration between Zensho Corporation, the University of Tokyo, and Vietnam National University, Hanoi), Professor Iwatsuki Junichi has made significant contributions to the friendly and cordial cooperative relationship between this organization and the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU Hanoi.
Through the connections of Professor Iwatsuki Junichi, scientists from the Department of Oriental Studies have participated in the organization and operation of the Hanoi-based Journal of Japanese Studies. This is a research journal of the Key Institution for Japanese Studies Program, with an ISSN listed in the University of Tokyo's publication catalog. It is a research journal employing an independent, blind peer-review system, aiming to be a high-quality journal publishing the latest research findings of Japanese studies scholars from Vietnam, Japan, and around the world. The first issue is expected to be published in 2024.
Started operating in November 2011,Japan Research Support ProgramThis program aims to promote the development of Japanese studies in Vietnam and is one of Zensho Group's "Support for Asian Talent Training" activities for the University of Tokyo. The program is currently in its third five-year phase at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi.
The program has actively supported the teaching and learning activities of lecturers, students, and graduate students of the Japanese Studies Department and has achieved some concrete results in equipping facilities, receiving graduate students as auditing students at the University of Tokyo, organizing intensive courses on Japan, organizing short-term internships at the University of Tokyo, inviting Vietnamese lecturers to conduct research at the University of Tokyo, organizing library management seminars, organizing the "Hanoi Rondo" Japan-Vietnam Studies forum, organizing reading sessions on ethnology, etc. The program has provided many learning and research opportunities for staff, lecturers, and students of VNU-USSH in general and the Japanese Studies major in particular.
