Professor Le Dinh Ky Award: Supporting generations of students to continue their path of literary theory research

Warm, friendly, and full of emotion – that was the atmosphere of the award ceremony for Professor Le Dinh Ky, People's Teacher, which was solemnly held at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi on the afternoon of April 4, 2024.
Representing the family of Professor Lê Đình Kỵ was Ms. Hoàng Thị Kim Phượng from the Center for the Heritage of Vietnamese Scientists.
Representing the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, were Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thu Hien, Party Secretary and Deputy Head of the Faculty of Literature; Dr. Nguyen Thi Nam Hoang, Deputy Head of the Faculty; Dr. Le Van Cuong, Deputy Head of the Faculty; along with faculty members of the Faculty of Literature, who are also students of Professor Le Dinh Ky; and students of the Faculty of Literature.
Professor Lê Đình Kỵ (1923-2009) was a renowned and highly talented educator, a leading figure in literary theory, who worked at the Faculty of Literature - Hanoi University from 1956 to 1980. He was awarded the State Prize for Literature and Arts, the First Class Resistance Medal, the First Class Labor Medal, and the title of People's Teacher. Professor Kỵ authored hundreds of scientific articles and dozens of valuable scholarly monographs (e.g., "The Path to Poetry," "The Tale of Kiều and Realism in the Era of Nguyễn Du," "Tố Hữu's Poetry," etc.).
At the award ceremony, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Thi Nhu Trang - Head of the Department of Literary Theory - emotionally shared that exactly one year ago, on April 4, 2023 - the 100th birthday of Professor Le Dinh Ky - the Department of Literary Theory organized a scientific conference to commemorate his birth. The conference was conducted in a serious scientific spirit and with much emotion. Following the conference, with the enthusiastic support of Associate Professor Dr. Tran Khanh Thanh and Associate Professor Dr. Pham Quang Long, the Department of Literary Theory was requested by Ms. Ngo Kim Long - the beloved wife of Professor Le Dinh Ky - to be the focal point for organizing the annual Le Dinh Ky Award at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, in order to continue the path of theoretical research and contribute to building and developing a democratic, humanistic, and scientific Vietnamese literary theory and criticism.
Fulfilling the cherished wishes of the family, the Department of Literature and Linguistics has established regulations for awarding the Lê Đình Kỵ Professor and People's Teacher Award in 2024 to 3 undergraduate students and 2 postgraduate students with outstanding academic and scientific research achievements. "This award is a precious legacy to be preserved, promoted, and to inspire learning and research for future generations of literature students at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi," emphasized Associate Professor Dr. Nguyễn Thị Như Trang.

As Ms. Hoang Kim Phuong, representing the family of Professor Le Dinh Ky, shared at the ceremony, the award is a heartfelt wish of the Professor's family to support and encourage outstanding students and trainees of the Faculty of Literature. "Seeing the academic achievements of the students and trainees, Professor Le Dinh Ky's family is very happy because the award will be a source of motivation to help them study even better," Ms. Kim Phuong stated.

Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Thu Hien - Party Secretary and Deputy Head of the Faculty of Literature, stated that the Professor Le Dinh Ky Award is the third award given by the Faculty of Literature to its students and trainees. Prior to this, the Faculty of Literature has annually awarded prestigious prizes such as the Dinh Gia Khanh Scholarship and the Faculty of Literature Scholarship. These awards not only provide material and spiritual support to students and trainees but also represent the transmission of the Faculty of Literature's academic tradition, preserved and continued through generations of teachers and students.
Recalling her profound memories with Professor Le Dinh Ky, Associate Professor Ly Hoai Thu – a beloved student of his – said emotionally: “During the difficult times the country faced, Professor Le Dinh Ky wrote elaborate and valuable works of literary theory, always caring for and sharing with his colleagues and students. It can be said that he was a dedicated and insightful teacher, simple in his lifestyle, profound and compassionate in his conduct.”
 
Associate Professors Ly Hoai Thu and Doan Duc Phuong, students of Professor Le Dinh Ky, were deeply moved when recalling cherished memories of their great teacher.
Dr. Nguyen Van Nam - former lecturer in the Faculty of Literature - shared his thoughts on the meticulous and dedicated research works of Professor Le Dinh Ky, a People's Teacher - and the valuable legacy he left for future generations.
Nguyen Thi Thao Chi (QH-2021-X cohort) was moved and proud to receive this prestigious award from the family of teacher Le Dinh Ky.
Students Nguyen Hai My (QH-2022-X-VH cohort), Tran Manh Cuong (QH-2020-X cohort), and Nguyen Thi Thao Chi (QH-2021-X cohort) were honored to receive the Le Dinh Ky Award presented to outstanding students.
Graduate students Dinh Thi Thu Huyen (QH-2022-X cohort) and Can Thi Huyen (QH-2022-X cohort) received the Le Dinh Ky Award for outstanding graduate students.

"The Le Dinh Ky Professor and People's Teacher Award"is a scholarship award coordinated by the family of Professor, People's Teacher Le Dinh Ky in collaboration with the Department of Literary Theory, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi. The award is given to students and graduate students of the Faculty of Literature with excellent academic and research results. It is held once a year and awarded in April every year. This is the first year the award is presented at VNU-USSH.
Eligibility and criteria for the award:
Students and graduate students participating in the Award must meet the following conditions:
For students:
- Students must have a GPA of 3.2 or higher for the academic year.
- Students do not have any failing grades (F) in any subjects during the academic year.
- Students have good training scores.
- Priority will be given to students who complete their thesis/dissertation in the Department of Literary Theory and have achieved an A grade or higher in the thesis/dissertation evaluation.
- Priority will be given to students who have won awards at the Faculty level or higher in their student research in the field of Literary Theory in previous years.
For graduate students:
- Students who achieved the highest entrance exam scores.
- Priority will be given to students specializing in Literary Theory.
Annual Award Structure:
The Professor Le Dinh Ky Award was presented to the three most outstanding undergraduate students and one graduate student who achieved the highest entrance exam score.
The award recipients were presented with a Certificate of the Professor and People's Teacher Award Le Dinh Ky and a cash prize of 3,000,000 VND per person.
