University of Social Sciences and Humanities promotes cooperation with Meta Group to implement the Project to improve AI application capacity for lecturers and students

On August 13, 2024, Prof. Dr. Hoang Anh Tuan (Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, VNU-USSH) chaired a working session with Mr. Ruici Tio, Manager of the Asia Pacific Safety and Integrity Policy Program of Meta Group.
Also attending were Associate Professor, Dr. Dang Thi Thu Huong (Vice Principal), Associate Professor, Dr. Do Van Hung (Head of Information and Library Department, the unit directly implementing the project), Dr. Nguyen Thi Kim Dung (Deputy Head of Information and Library Department), and representatives of the Department of Cooperation and Development.

The main content of the working session: the two sides discussed and agreed on plans and solutions to promote the implementation of the project: Improving the capacity to apply artificial intelligence (Gen AI) in teaching and learning activities for lecturers and students of VNU-USSH in the period of 2024-2025.
On behalf of the Board of Directors of USSH, President Hoang Anh Tuan expressed his gratitude to Mr. Ruici Tio personally as well as Meta Group for always trusting and choosing USSH as a strategic partner to implement important projects in the Southeast Asia region, focusing on developing necessary skills and capacities for learners in the digital environment,... The two sides have successfully cooperated to implement the project to improve digital capacity for USSH students (2020-2022 period).

Principal Hoang Anh Tuan highly appreciated the practical value of the results of the VNU-USSH and Meta projects on digital capacity for VNU students in general and the University's students in particular.

In the context of artificial intelligence having a profound impact on many fields, especially in higher education, to keep up with this trend, the two sides continue to cooperate in the second phase, focusing on developing the capacity to use Gen AI for students and lecturers of the School. Principal Hoang Anh Tuan emphasized the importance of this project and committed to focusing resources and closely coordinating with Meta to successfully implement this project, in order to bring practical values, contributing significantly to the successful implementation of the innovation strategy, improving the quality of training of the School in the direction of modernization and international integration.
Agreeing with the statement of President Hoang Anh Tuan, Mr. Ruici Tio highly appreciated the initiative, professionalism and active participation of experts, scientists and lecturers from the University of Social Sciences and Humanities. That is the most crucial point to ensure the successful implementation of cooperation projects between Meta and VNU-USSH in recent times. The unexpected success of the project on digital capacity, especially the fact that VNU-USSH has announced the first digital capacity framework for students in Vietnam, is an important basis for Meta to trust and continue to cooperate with the University in the project of applying artificial intelligence in learning, research and teaching.
The representative of Meta Group also shared the goal of the Project to improve the capacity of AI application for lecturers and students in the context of digital transformation taking place very strongly, the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become an inevitable trend and penetrated into all areas of social life. Meta Group is a large technology corporation and cannot help but join the AI ​​technology train. We are investing heavily in this technology. It can be said that nowadays we see AI everywhere, but in reality, we believe that the majority of students do not really have full awareness and understanding of the benefits of AI, how to apply AI tools to study, work, develop themselves appropriately and effectively, responsibly, exercise the rights and obligations of citizens in the digital environment, ...

Mr. Ruici Tio emphasized: "We highly appreciate the practical significance of the cooperation idea between the two sides to implement this project. The results of the project are also an important data source for us to continue researching and developing Meta's AI technology."
During the meeting, the delegates exchanged many opinions affirming the specific goals, progress and products of the Project, and assigned responsible contacts to ensure smooth and effective coordination. The two sides committed to completing a number of important products to welcome the visit and work of Mr. Nick Clegg - Chairman of Global Affairs of Meta (he was the former Deputy Prime Minister of the UK) scheduled for early October 2024 at Hanoi National University.
The project to improve AI application capacity for lecturers and students aims to improve the understanding and capacity to apply artificial intelligence in teaching, learning and daily life of lecturers and students of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU; with 3 specific objectives:
Help lecturers and students gain a deeper understanding of the role and impact of AI in social life and in higher education.
Equip teachers and students with the knowledge and skills to evaluate, select, and use AI tools that suit their needs; help them use AI ethically, legally, and with critical thinking.
Develop a toolkit of competency frameworks, assessment tools and learning materials to serve digital competency development activities for lecturers and students inside and outside VNU.
Associate Professor, Dr. Do Van Hung (Head of the Faculty of Information and Library) added: The project will be implemented for nearly 2 years (from June 2024 to December 2025). Based on a survey of the needs and actual capacity of lecturers and students in applying AI in teaching activities, the project will develop content and implement AI training courses for teachers and students; develop and publish a set of learning materials on the digital competency framework and digital competency assessment tools.

Head of the Department of Information and Library Do Van Hung also informed: Within the framework of the Project, a national workshop on project implementation results will also be held.
