Friday - November 14, 2025 01:01
(GD&TĐ) The forum 'Science, Training and Research in Social Sciences and Humanities in the New Context' took place in Hanoi on November 14, 2025.
The forum was organized by the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Vietnam National University, Hanoi). In his opening remarks, Professor Hoang Anh Tuan, Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, acknowledged that science and education are facing many new developmental contexts. Within this context, social sciences and humanities – with their unique nature and important role in intellectual life – also face many opportunities and challenges.
According to Professor Hoang Anh Tuan, based on a summary of the development journey and within the context of the overall development of science and education in the country as well as the major trends of higher education worldwide, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities has implemented many activities to objectively and frankly evaluate and survey the achievements it has attained.
More importantly, the goal is to identify the current situation and trends in order to establish appropriate directions for the new phase. These directions are not only for the University as a training and research institution, but are also expected to contribute to and inspire the development of the social sciences and humanities nationwide.
Professor Hoang Anh Tuan - Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, delivered the opening remarks at the Forum.
Professor Hoang Anh Tuan affirmed that the university is clearly aware of its role in training human resources, conducting scientific research, advising on policies, serving the community, and creating and disseminating knowledge to make practical contributions to the overall development of the nation.
Speaking at the forum, Associate Professor Dr. Dang Hong Son - Vice Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities - emphasized that the Forum will be an important basis for determining the development direction for training and research, contributing to the overall development of the social sciences and humanities in the new context.
Associate Professor Dr. Dang Hong Son stated that over the past three decades, the field of social sciences and humanities has undergone many significant changes closely linked to the development of higher education and the country.
First and foremost is the shift in educational philosophy. While the period from 1956 to 1995 was marked by an academic training foundation, establishing the "Hanoi Comprehensive School of thought," from the late 1980s to the 1990s, along with the reform process and the formation of Hanoi National University, the educational philosophy underwent a significant transformation.
Modern ideas such as "learner-centered education" and "liberal education" have become the foundation for expanding and diversifying training programs from 1995 to the present.
In the current context, where the role of social sciences and humanities is increasingly valued, the University continues to develop a modern, liberal education approach, based on the fundamental scientific foundation established from its early days.
Associate Professor Dr. Dang Hong Son – Vice Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, shared his views at the Forum.
According to Associate Professor Dr. Dang Hong Son, another important highlight is the development in scale and structure of the disciplines. While in 1994, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities had 8 faculties and 10 training programs, by 2009 this had increased to 15 faculties and 20 programs. By 2025, the number of training units will remain at 15, but the number of undergraduate training programs will have expanded to 30.
This development reflects a shift from a "one faculty - one major" model to a "multidisciplinary faculty," linked to interdisciplinary and cross-disciplinary approaches. At the postgraduate level, the scale of training has also expanded significantly. Currently, the university offers 30 undergraduate programs, 32 master's programs, and 22 doctoral programs (streamlined from over 30 previous programs to integrate specialized fields).
He affirmed that the figures and development practices over the past 30 years show that social sciences and humanities not only play an important role but also continuously adapt to the new context of the country and the world.
Experts and scientists participated in the Forum.
The forum focused on assessing the current status, achievements, and prospects in training and research for each discipline; the role and importance of each discipline in modern society; and identifying the characteristics, strengths, achievements, and results of training and research in the discipline at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities. The application of new technologies, digital transformation, and artificial intelligence in teaching and research activities, as well as international experiences and lessons for training and research in the discipline in Vietnam, were also key topics of discussion.
