Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Thi Minh Hang and Associate Professor Dr. Bui Thi Hong Thai, along with two teaching assistants, MSc. Dr. Tran Van Minh and MSc. Dao Thi Hoa, shared knowledge about mental health, aiming to help participants understand mental health issues and learn how to cope when they or their children experience psychological difficulties.
The instructors pointed out the signs that people should look out for in order to recognize if a child is experiencing mental health problems:
- I felt very sad and withdrawn for over two weeks.
- Having behaviors/plans to harm oneself.
- There are panic attacks that have no reason.
- Fighting or talking about wanting revenge on someone.
- Loss of behavioral control, potentially causing harm to oneself or others.
- They often vomit, starve themselves, or resort to other negative methods to lose weight.
- There are anxieties and fears that prevent the child from participating in daily activities.
In addition, experts also point out measures to prevent mental health problems that students need to pay attention to: (1) Eat healthily, exercise regularly, get enough sleep; (2) Limit exposure to negative information, do things you love, listen to relaxing music, talk to friends, garden… (3) Avoid contact with people who have negative tendencies, share feelings with people you trust, establish new relationships, participate in volunteer activities… (4) Maintain mindfulness, manage emotions.
Through the training session, teachers, staff, and students gained a better understanding and clearer awareness of mental health issues, while also enhancing students' coping skills. In addition, participants received knowledge about reproductive health, sexual health, child marriage, and consanguineous marriage. These topics were included in the training session to raise awareness and aim to reduce these problems in Mai Chau.
